We may not catch fish from a fish pond on Yom Tov, nor may we place food before them, but we may catch animals or fowl from enclosures, and we may put food before them. Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel says: Not all enclosures are the same. This is the general rule: Whatever requires trapping is prohibited, and whatever does not require trapping is permitted.

If traps for animals, birds, or fish were set prior to Yom Tov, one may not take from them on Yom Tov, unless he knows that they were trapped before Yom Tov. There was an incident with a certain gentile who brought fish to Rabban Gamliel, and he said, ‘‘They may be eaten, but I do not want to accept [a present] from him.’’
