[If] someone plants one row within his own property, and there is one row within his neighbor’s property, and there is a private road or a public road in the middle, or a wall which is lower
than ten handbreadths, then these [rows] combine. [If the wall is] higher than ten handbreadths, [the rows] do not combine. R’ Yehudah says: If he intertwined them above, then they combine.
Kilaim4: 8
[If] someone plants two rows [of vines] — if there are not eight cubits between them, he may not bring [foreign] seed there.
[If] there were three [rows] — if there are not sixteen cubits between one row and the next, he may not bring [foreign] seed there. R’ Eliezer ben Yaakov says in the name of Chanina ben Chachinai: Even if the middle [row] is destroyed, and there are not sixteen cubits between one row and the next, he may not bring seed there, even though had they been planted [thus] to begin with, it would have been permitted with eight cubits.
Kilaim4: 9
[If] someone plants his vineyard sixteen cubits, sixteen cubits . . ., it is permitted to bring seed there.
R’ Yehudah said: It happened in Tzalmon that a certain individual planted his vineyard sixteen [cubits], sixteen cubits . . . And he used to turn the branches of two rows towards the same area and plant the plowed area, and the following year he would turn the branches to the other side and plant the barren area, and the story came before the Sages and they permitted [it].
R’ Meir and R’ Shimon say: Even if someone plants his vineyard eight [cubits], eight cubits . . ., it is permitted.
Kilaim5: 1
[If] a vineyard was destroyed — if there are [still] to be found in it ten vines per beis se’ah and they are planted in the correct configuration, this is called a ‘‘poor vineyard.’’
[If] a vineyard was planted chaotically — if it is possible to align two opposite three, then this is a vineyard; if not, it is not a vineyard. R’ Meir says: Since it resembles the structure of vineyards, it is a vineyard.
Kilaim5: 2
[If] a vineyard is planted with less than four cubits [between rows], R’ Shimon says: It is not a vineyard. But the Sages say: [It is] a vineyard, and we view the interior [vines] as if they are not [present].
Kilaim5: 3
[If] a ditch which passes through a vineyard is ten [handbreadths] deep and four wide, R’ Eliezer ben Yaakov says: If it stretches from one end of the vineyard to the [other] end, then it looks like it is between two vineyards, and it is permitted to plant inside it. But if not, then it is like a winepress.
And [if] a winepress in a vineyard is ten deep and four wide, R’ Eliezer says: [It is permitted] to plant inside it. But the Sages forbid [this].
[If] the lookout in a vineyard is ten high and four wide, planting inside it [is permitted]. But if branches were intertwined [above it], it is forbidden.
Kilaim5: 4

[If] a grapevine is planted inside a winepress or a hole, [we] give it its work area and plant the remainder.
R’ Yose says: If there are not four cubits, he may not bring [foreign] seed there.
A house in a vineyard may be planted inside.
Kilaim5: 5
[If] someone plants greens in a vineyard or maintains [them], this condemns forty-five grapevines. When? When they were planted four-four or five-five. [But if] they were planted six-six or seven-seven, this condemns sixteen cubits in each direction, round not square.
Kilaim5: 6
[If] someone sees greens in the vineyard and says, ‘‘When I reach it I will pick it’’ — it is permitted. ‘‘When I return I will pick it’’ — if it increased a two-hundredth, it is forbidden.

[If] someone was passing through [his] vineyard and seeds fell from him, or [seeds] were released together with the dung or with the water, [or if] someone was sowing and the wind blew [seed] behind him — it is permitted. [If] wind blew [seed] in front of him, R’ Akiva says: If [it grows] grasses he must turn it; if the grains have begun to ripen, he must shake the grains out of the ears; if it has produced completed grain, it must be burned.
Kilaim5: 8

What is an aris? [If] someone plants a row of five vines next to a wall which is ten handbreadths high, or next to a ditch which is ten handbreadths deep and four wide, we give this for its work area four cubits.
Beis Shammai say: We measure the four cubits from the base of the vines to the field. But Beis Hillel say: From the wall to the field.
Said R’ Yochanan ben Nuri: They err, all those who say so. Rather, if there are four cubits from the base of the vines to the wall, we give it its work area and he may plant the remainder.
And how much is the work area of a vine? Six handbreadths in every direction. R’ Akiva says: Three.
Kilaim6: 2

[If] an aris protrudes from an embankment — R’ Eliezer ben Yaakov says: If while standing on the ground one can pick it completely, it prohibits four cubits in the field; if not, it prohibits only across from it. R’ Eliezer says: Even if someone plants one on the ground and one on the embankment, if it is higher than the ground by ten handbreadths, it is not combined with it; but if not, then it combines with it.
