כָּל מָקוֹם שֶׁאֵין חֶסְרוֹן מְלָאכָה — מַחֲשָׁבָה מְטַמְּאָתָן, וְכָל מָקוֹם שֶׁיֵּשׁ חֶסְרוֹן מְלאָכָה — אֵין מַחֲשָׁבָה מְטַמְּאָתָן, אֶלָּא הָעֻצְבָּה.
Wherever [further] processing is not lacking, thought renders [utensils] tamei. And wherever [further] processing is lacking, thought does not render [utensils] tamei, except for a saddle cover.

עוֹרוֹת בַּעַל הַבַּיִת — מַחֲשָׁבָה מְטַמְּאָתַן, וְשֶׁל עַבְּדָן — אֵין מַחֲשָׁבָה מְטַמְּאָתָן.
שֶׁל גַּנָּב — מַחֲשָׁבָה מְטַמְּאָתָן, וְשֶׁל גַּזְלָן — אֵין מַחֲשָׁבָה מְטַמְּאָתָן.
רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אוֹמֵר, חִלּוּף הַדְּבָרִים: שֶׁל גַּזְלָן — מַחֲשָׁבָה מְטַמְּאָתָן, וְשֶׁל גַּנָּב — אֵין מַחֲשָׁבָה מְטַמְּאָתָן, מִפְּנֵי שֶׁלֹּא נִתְיָאֲשׁוּ הַבְּעָלִים.
[Regarding] hides of a householder, thought renders them tamei. But [regarding hides] of a tanner, thought does not render them tamei.
[Regarding hides] of a thief, thought renders them tamei; but [regarding hides] of a robber, thought does not render them tamei.
R’ Shimon says the opposite: [Regarding hides] of a robber, thought renders them tamei. But [regarding hides] of a thief, thought does not render them tamei, since the owners have not despaired.
