Wooden utensils, leather utensils, bone utensils, [and] glass utensils: Their flatwares are tahor but their hollowares are tamei. If they break, they become tahor. [If] one remade [the broken utensils] into [new] utensils, they are susceptible to tumah from then on.
[Regarding] a bin, a chest, a cabinet, a straw basket, a reed basket, and the cistern of an Alexandrian ship, that have [flat] bottoms, and they [can] contain forty liquid se’ahs, which are two kors of dry [measure], these [utensils] are tahor. All other utensils, whether they can contain [forty liquid se’ahs], or whether they cannot contain [forty liquid se’ahs], are tamei; [these are] the words of R’ Meir.
R’ Yehudah says: A wagon’s barrel, provision chests of kings, a tanners’ trough, the cistern of a small ship, and a coffin, even though they [can] contain [forty liquid se’ahs], are [all] tamei, because they are designed for no other purpose than to be moved together with their contents. But [as regards] all other utensils, those that can contain [forty liquid se’ahs] are tahor, while those that cannot contain [forty liquid se’ahs] are tamei.
There is no [difference] between the words of R’ Meir and the words of R’ Yehudah, except a kneading trough of a householder.
