All utensils may be taken on the Sabbath and their doors with them, even though they were detached on the Sabbath; for they are not like house doors, which are not prepared.

A person may take a hammer with which to crack nuts; or a hatchet [with which] to cut a cake of pressed figs; a saw with which to slice cheese; a shovel with which to scoop up dried figs; a winnowing shovel or a pitchfork on which to put [something] for a child; a spindle or a weaver’s reed with which to spear [fruit]; a hand needle with which to take [out] a thorn; or [a] sackmakers’ [needle] with which to open a door.

A cane for olives, if there is a knot at its end, it is susceptible to tumah-contamination; and if not, it is not susceptible to tumah-contamination. In either case it may be taken on the Sabbath.

R’ Yose says: All utensils may be taken except for a large saw and a colter. All utensils may be taken either out of necessity or not out of necessity. R’ Nechemiah says: They may not be taken except out of necessity.

All utensils which may be taken on the Sabbath, fragments of them may [also] be taken with them, provided they can [still] be used to perform some sort of task; [for example,] fragments of a mixing bowl with which to cover the mouth of a cask, [or] fragments of a glass with which to cover the mouth of a flask. R’ Yehudah says: Provided they can [still] perform in the nature of their [former] task; [for example,] fragments of a mixing bowl into which to pour porridge, [or] fragments of a glass into which to pour oil.

A stone that is in a gourd-shell, if water can be drawn with it without its falling out, we may draw [water] with it; and if not, we may not draw [water] with it. A branch that is tied to a pitcher, we may draw water with it on the Sabbath.

A window shutter, R’ Eliezer says: When it is fastened and suspended, we may shut [the window] with it; and if not, we may not shut [the window] with it. But the Sages say: In either case we may shut [the window] with it.

All utensil covers which have handles may be taken on the Sabbath. Said R’ Yose: When is this said? Regarding a cover of [a hole in] the ground; but regarding covers of utensils, in either case we may take them on the Sabbath.
