All [books of] Holy Scripture may be saved from the fire, whether we read from them or whether we do not read from them. Even though they are written in any [foreign] language, they warrant being hidden away. Now why do we not read from them? Because of the neglect of the lecture hall. We may save the case of the scroll with the scroll, and the case of the tefillin with the tefillin, even though there is money in them. To where may we take them for safety? To a blind alley. Ben Beseira says: Even to an open one.

We may save [enough] food for three meals; what is fit for people [may be saved] for people, what is fit for animals [may be saved] for animals. How so? If a fire broke out on the Sabbath eve, we may save [only enough] food for three meals; if during the morning, we may save [only enough] food for two meals; if in the afternoon, [we may save only enough] food for one meal. R’ Yose says: We may always save [enough] food for three meals.

We may save a basket full of loaves — even though there is [enough] in it for one hundred meals — or a round cake of pressed figs, or a barrel of wine. And one may say to others, ‘‘Come and save for yourselves.’’ If they were discerning, they would make a reckoning with him after the Sabbath. To where may they take them for safety? To a courtyard provided with an eruv. Ben Beseira says: Even to one not provided with an eruv.

And to there he may take out all the utensils required for his use, and he may don all that he can wear, and wrap himself in all that he can wrap himself. R’ Yose says: [He may don only] eighteen articles [of apparel]. And he may return and don [other garments] and take [them] out. And he may say to others, ‘‘Come and save with me.’’

R’ Shimon ben Nannas says: We may spread a kid’s hide over a chest, a box, or a closet that has caught fire, because it singes. Likewise, we may make a partition with any vessels, whether full or empty, so that the fire not spread. R’ Yose prohibits [making a partition] with new earthenware vessels filled with water, because they cannot endure the fire, and they crack and [thereby] extinguish the fire.

If a gentile came to extinguish, they may not say to him, ‘‘Extinguish,’’ nor [must they say to him], ‘‘Do not extinguish,’’ because his resting is not their responsibility. But if a minor comes to extinguish, they may not allow him [to do so], because his resting is their responsibility.

We may invert a bowl over a lamp in order that it not set fire to a beam; or over feces [because] of a child; or over a scorpion so that it not sting. R’ Yehudah said: An incident came before Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai in Arab, and he said, ‘‘I fear for him [that he is liable] for a sin offering.’’

If a gentile lit a lamp, a Jew may use its light; but if [he did so] for a Jew, he may not [use it]. If [a gentile] drew water to water his own animal, a Jew may water [his animal] after him; but if [he did so] for a Jew, he may not [use it]. If a gentile made a gangway upon which to disembark, a Jew may disembark after him; but if [he did so] for a Jew, he may not [use it]. It once happened that Rabban Gamliel and the elders were arriving on a ship, and a gentile made a gangway by which to disembark, and Rabban Gamliel and the elders disembarked by it.
