[However, if the hive] was broken and stuffed with straw, or if it contains forty se’ah, according to the Sages, and there is tumah below, inside, or above [the hive], tumah penetrates upward and downward. R’ Eliezer and R’ Shimon say: Tumah does not enter [the hive], and does not descend from it. [If the hive] is a handbreadth above the ground and there is tumah underneath it, what is underneath it becomes tamei. [If the tumah is] inside or above it, [utensils] directly above [the tumah] up to the sky become tamei.
