She who aborts on the eve of the eighty-first [day] — Beis Shammai exempt [her] from an offering, but Beis Hillel declare [her] liable. Said Beis Hillel to Beis Shammai: In what way does the evening preceding the eighty-first day differ from the eighty-first day [itself]? [Furthermore,] if it is the same regarding tumah, should it not be the same regarding an offering? Beis Shammai replied to them: No, if you said regarding [a woman] who aborted on the eighty-first day, it is because it came out at a time when she is fit to bring an offering; will you say [it] of one who aborts on the evening preceding the eighty-first day, for it did not come out at a time when she is fit to bring an offering? Replied Beis Hillel: But she who aborts on the eighty-first day that fell on the Sabbath will prove [our point], for it did not come out at a time when she is fit to bring an offering, yet she is liable to an offering. Replied Beis Shammai: No, if you said of one who aborted on the eighty-first day that fell on the Sabbath, for even though it is unfit for a personal offering, it is fit for a communal offering; will you say of one who aborted on the evening of the eighty-first day, since the night is fit neither for a personal offering nor for a communal offering? [Moreover,] the [law of] the blood is not conclusive since [if a woman] aborts within the melos period, her blood is ritually contaminated, yet she is exempt from an offering.

A woman, who is liable for five doubtful cases of zivah, or for five doubtful cases of childbirth, must bring one offering, and [then] she may partake of offerings, and she is not bound to bring the rest. For five definite cases of childbirth, or for five definite cases of zivah, she must bring one offering, and [then] she may partake of offerings, but she is bound to bring the rest. It happened that in Jerusalem the price of pairs [of doves rose until it] settled at golden dinars. Said Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel: ‘‘[By] this Temple! I will not pass the night until they are sold for [silver] dinars.’’ He entered the beis din and taught: If a woman must bring offerings for five definite cases of childbirth or for five definite cases of zivah — she must bring one offering, and [then] she may partake of the offerings, and she is not bound to bring the rest. And on that day the price of pairs [of doves dropped until it] settled at two quarters of a dinar.
