משֶׁה קִבֵּל תּוֹרָה מִסִּינַי, וּמְסָרָהּ לִיהוֹשֻׁעַ, וִיהוֹשֻׁעַ לִזְקֵנִים, וּזְקֵנִים לִנְבִיאִים, וּנְבִיאִים מְסָרוּהָ לְאַנְשֵׁי כְנֶסֶת הַגְּדוֹלָה.  הֵם אָמְרוּ שְׁלשָׁה דְבָרִים: הֱווּ מְתוּנִים בַּדִּין, וְהַעֲמִידוּ תַלְמִידִים הַרְבֵּה, וַעֲשׂוּ סְיָג לַתּוֹרָה.
Moses received the Torah from Sinai, and transmitted it to Joshua, and Joshua to the Elders, and the Elders to the Prophets, and the Prophets transmitted it to the Men of the Great Assembly. They said three things: Be deliberate in judgment, develop many students, and make a fence around the Torah.

הַלּוֹקֵחַ כְּלֵי תַשְׁמִישׁ מִן הַגּוֹי, אֶת שֶׁדַּרְכּוֹ לְהַטְבִּיל — יַטְבִּיל; לְהַגְעִיל — יַגְעִיל; לְלַבֵּן בָּאוּר — יְלַבֵּן בָּאוּר. הַשְּׁפוּד וְהָאַסְכְּלָה — מְלַבְּנָן בָּאוּר. הַסַּכִּין — שָׁפָהּ וְהִיא טְהוֹרָה.
[If] one acquires food utensils from a gentile —- if its customary way is to immerse, he should immerse [it]; to boil, he should boil [it]; to purge in fire, he should purge [it] in fire. The spit and the grill, one purges in fire; the knife, one polishes and it is purified.
