שַׂק שֶׁהוּא מָלֵא פֵּרוֹת, וּנְתָנוֹ עַל גַּב הַנָּהָר, אוֹ עַל פִּי הַבּוֹר, אוֹ עַל מַעֲלוֹת הַמְּעָרָה, וְשָׁאֲבוּ, כָּל שֶׁשָּׁאֲבוּ — בְּכִי יֻתַּן. רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר: כָּל שֶׁהוּא כְּנֶגֶד הַמַּיִם — בְּכִי יֻתַּן, וְכָל שֶׁאֵינוֹ כְּנֶגֶד הַמַּיִם — אֵינוֹ בְּכִי יֻתַּן.
[Regarding] a sack that is filled with produce which one placed on the riverbank, or over the opening of a cistern, or on the steps of a cave, and [the produce] absorbed [water], all [the produce] that absorbed [water] is included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” R’ Yehudah says: All [the produce] that faces the water is included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed,” and all [the produce] that does not face the water is not included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.”
Machshirin3: 2
חָבִית שֶׁהִיא מְלֵאָה פֵּרוֹת וּנְתוּנָה לְתוֹךְ הַמַּשְׁקִין, אוֹ מְלֵאָה מַשְׁקִין וּנְתוּנָה לְתוֹךְ הַפֵּרוֹת, וְשָׁאֲבוּ, כָּל שֶׁשָּׁאֲבוּ — בְּכִי יֻתַּן. בְּאֵלּוּ מַשְׁקִים אָמְרוּ: בַּמַּיִם וּבַיַּיִן וּבַחֹמֶץ וּשְׁאָר כָּל הַמַּשְׁקִין — טְהוֹרִין. רַבִּי נְחֶמְיָה מְטַהֵר בַּקִּטְנִית, שֶׁאֵין הַקִּטְנִית שׁוֹאֶבֶת.
[Regarding] a barrel that is full of produce and it was placed into liquid, or [a barrel] full of liquid and it was placed into pro-duce, and [the produce] absorbed [liquid], all [the produce] that absorbed [liquid] is included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” They said [this] with regard to these liquids: with regard to water, wine, and vinegar. But [with regard to] all the other liquids, [the produce] is tahor. R’ Nechemyah rules legumes tahor, for legumes do not absorb.
Machshirin3: 3
הָרוֹדֶה פַּת חַמָּה, וּנְתָנָהּ עַל פִּי חָבִית שֶׁל יַיִן — רַבִּי מֵאִיר מְטַמֵּא; רַבִּי יְהוּדָה מְטַהֵר; רַבִּי יוֹסֵי מְטַהֵר בְּשֶׁל חִטִּים וּמְטַמֵּא בְּשֶׁל שְׂעוֹרִים, מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהַשְּׂעוֹרִים שׁוֹאֲבוֹת.
[If] one removes hot bread from an oven and places it on the mouth of a barrel of wine,
R’ Meir rules [the bread] tamei; R’ Yehudah rules [the bread] tahor; R’ Yose rules [the bread] tahor in the case of wheat [bread], but rules [the bread] tamei in the case of barley [bread], because barley absorbs.
Machshirin3: 4
הַמְרַבֵּץ אֶת בֵּיתוֹ וְנָתַן בּוֹ חִטִּים וְטָנְנוּ, אִם מֵחֲמַת הַמַּיִם — בְּכִי יֻתַּן. וְאִם מֵחֲמַת הַסֶּלַע — אֵינָן בְּכִי יֻתַּן. הַמְכַבֵּס אֶת כְּסוּתוֹ בָּעֲרֵבָה, נָתַן בָּהּ חִטִּים וְטָנְנוּ, אִם מֵחֲמַת הַמַּיִם — בְּכִי יֻתַּן. אִם מֵחֲמַת עַצְמָן — אֵינָן בְּכִי יֻתַּן. הַמְטַנֵּן בַּחוֹל — הֲרֵי זֶה בְּכִי יֻתַּן. מַעֲשֶׂה בְּאַנְשֵׁי הַמָּחוֹז שֶׁהָיוּ מְטִנִּין בַּחוֹל. אָמְרוּ לָהֶם חֲכָמִים: אִם כָּךְ הֱיִיתֶם עוֹשִׂים — לֹא עֲשִׂיתֶם טָהֳרָה מִימֵיכֶם.
[Regarding] one who sprinkles his house [with water] and [then] placed wheat there and [the wheat] was moistened, if [it is] due to the water, it is included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” But if [it is] due to the bedrock, it is not included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” [Regarding] one who washes his garment in a basin, [and] he placed wheat there and [the wheat] was moistened, if [it is] due to the water, it is included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” [But] if [it is] due to [the kernels of wheat] themselves, it is not included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” [Regarding] one who mois-tens [produce] in sand, it is included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” There was an incident with the people of Machoz who would moisten [produce] in sand. [And] the Sages said to them: If this is what you have been doing, then you have nev-er in your lives produced [flour in] taharah.

הַמְטַנֵּן בְּטִיט הַנָּגוּב — רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אוֹמֵר: אִם יֶשׁ בּוֹ מַשְׁקֶה טוֹפֵחַ — בְּכִי יֻתַּן, וְאִם לָאו — אֵינוֹ בְּכִי יֻתַּן. הַמְרַבֵּץ אֶת גָּרְנוֹ — אֵינוֹ חוֹשֵׁשׁ שֶׁמָּא נָתַן בָּהּ חִטִּים וְטָנְנוּ. הַמְלַקֵּט עֲשָׂבִים כְּשֶׁהַטַּל עֲלֵיהֶם, לְהָטֵן בָּהֶם חִטִּים — אֵינָן בְּכִי יֻתַּן; אִם נִתְכַּוֵּן לְכָךְ — הֲרֵי זֶה בְּכִי יֻתַּן. הַמּוֹלִיךְ חִטִּין לִטְחוֹן וְיָרְדוּ עֲלֵיהֶן גְּשָׁמִים, אִם שָׂמַח — בְּכִי יֻתַּן. רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר: אִי אֶפְשַׁר שֶׁלֹּא לִשְׂמוֹחַ, אֶלָּא אִם עָמַד.
[Regarding] one who moistens [produce] in dried mud, R’ Shimon says: If it contains liquid sufficient to moisten, [it is] in-cluded in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” But if not, it is not included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” [Regard-ing] one who sprinkles his silo [with water], he need not be concerned that perhaps he put wheat there and it was mois-tened. [Regarding] one who gathers [blades of] grass when dew is upon them, in order to moisten wheat with them, they are not included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” [But] if he intended this, it is included in [the law of] ”if [wa-ter] is placed.” [Regarding] one who transports wheat to grind and rain fell on it, if he is happy, [it is] included in [the law of] “if [water] is placed.” R’ Yehudah says: It is impossible not to be happy, rather, [only] if he stood [still].
Machshirin3: 6
הָיוּ זֵיתָיו נְתוּנִים בַּגַּג וְיָרְדוּ עֲלֵיהֶן גְּשָׁמִים, אִם שָׂמַח — בְּכִי יֻתַּן. רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר: אִי אֶפְשַׁר שֶׁלֹּא לִשְׂמוֹחַ, אֶלָּא, אִם פָּקַק אֶת הַצִּנּוֹר, אוֹ אִם חִלְחֵל לְתוֹכָן.
[If] his olives were put on the roof and rain fell on them, if he is happy, [it is] included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” R’ Yehudah says: It is impossible not to be happy, rather, [only] if he blocks the drainpipe, or if he rolled [the olives] about in [the water].
Machshirin3: 7
הַחַמָּרִין שֶׁהָיוּ עוֹבְרִים בַּנָּהָר וְנָפְלוּ שַׂקֵּיהֶם לַמַּיִם, אִם שָׂמְחוּ — בְּכִי יֻתַּן. רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר: אִי אֶפְשָׁר שֶׁלֹּא לִשְׂמוֹחַ, אֶלָּא, אִם הָפְכוּ. הָיוּ רַגְלָיו מְלֵאוֹת טִיט, וְכֵן רַגְלֵי בְהֶמְתּוֹ, עָבַר בַּנָּהָר, אִם שָׂמַח — בְּכִי יֻתַּן. רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר: אִי אֶפְשָׁר שֶׁלֹּא לִשְׂמוֹחַ, אֶלָּא, אִם עָמַד וְהֵדִיחַ. בָּאָדָם וּבִבְהֵמָה טְמֵאָה — לְעוֹלָם טָמֵא.
[Regarding] donkey drivers who were passing through a river and their sacks fell into the water, if they were happy, [it is] in-cluded in [the law of] “if [water] is placed.~” R’ Yehudah says: It is impossible not to be happy, rather, [only] if they turned [the sacks] over. [If] one’s feet were full of mud, and similarly the feet of his animal, [and] he passed through a river, if he was happy, [it is] included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” R’ Yehudah says: It is impossible not to be happy, rather, [only] if he stood [still] and rinsed. With regard to a person and a nonkosher animal, it is always tamei.
Machshirin3: 8
הַמּוֹרִיד אֶת הַגַּלְגַּלִּים וְאֶת כְּלֵי הַבָּקָר בִּשְׁעַת הַקָּדִים לַמַּיִם בִּשְׁבִיל שֶׁיָּחֹצוּ — הֲרֵי זֶה בְּכִי יֻתַּן. הַמּוֹרִיד בְּהֵמָה לִשְׁתּוֹת, הַמַּיִם הָעוֹלִים בְּפִיהָ — בְּכִי יֻתַּן. וּבְרַגְלֶיהָ — אֵינָן בְּכִי יֻתַּן. אִם חִשֵּׁב שֶׁיּוּדְחוּ רַגְלֶיהָ — אַף הָעוֹלִין בְּרַגְלֶיהָ בְּכִי יֻתַּן. בִּשְׁעַת הַיַּחַף וְהַדַּיִשׁ — לְעוֹלָם טָמֵא. הוֹרִיד חֵרֵשׁ שׁוֹטֶה וְקָטָן, אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁחִשֵּׁב שֶׁיּוּדְחוּ רַגְלֶיהָ, אֵינָן בְּכִי יֻתַּן, שֶׁיֵּשׁ לָהֶן מַעֲשֶׂה וְאֵין לָהֶן מַחֲשָׁבָה.
[Regarding] one who brings wheels and cattle gear down to the water during a heat wave in order that they bond, this [wa-ter] is included in [the law of] «if [water] is placed.” [Regarding] one who brings an animal down [to the water] to drink, the water that comes up in its mouth [is] included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” But [as for the water which is brought up] on its legs, it is not included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” If he intended that its legs be rinsed, even [the water] brought up on its legs [is] included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” During the time of footsores and threshing, [the wa-ter] is always tamei. [If] a deaf-mute, a deranged person, or a minor brought [the animal] down [to the water], even though he intended that its feet be rinsed, [the water] is not included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed,” for they have [legal] actions, but they do not have [legal] intent.
Machshirin4: 1
הַשּׁוֹחֶה לִשְׁתּוֹת, הַמַּיִם הָעוֹלִים בְּפִיו וּבִשְׂפָמוֹ — בְּכִי יֻתַּן; בְּחָטְמוֹ וּבְרֹאשׁוֹ וּבִזְקָנוֹ — אֵינָן בְּכִי יֻתַּן. הַמְמַלֵּא בֶּחָבִית, הַמַּיִם הָעוֹלִים אַחֲרֶיהָ, וּבַחֶבֶל שֶׁהוּא מְכֻנָּן עַל צַוָּארָהּ, וּבַחֶבֶל שֶׁהוּא לְצָרְכָּהּ — הֲרֵי זֶה בְּכִי יֻתַּן. כַּמָּה הוּא צָרְכָּהּ? רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן אֶלְעָזָר אוֹמֵר: טֶפַח. נְתָנָהּ תַּחַת הַצִּנּוֹר — אֵינָן בְּכִי יֻתַּן.
[Regarding] one who bent down to drink, the water that comes up on his mouth and mustache [is] included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” [But as for the water] on his nose and on his head and his beard, it is not included in [the law of] “if [wa-ter] is placed.” [Regarding] one who fills a barrel [with water], the water that comes up on its outside, and on the rope that is coiled around its neck, and on the rope that is for its needs, this [water] is included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” How much is ”for its needs”? R’ Shimon ben Elazar says: A tefach. [If] he put it beneath a pipe, [the water] is not included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.”
Machshirin4: 2
מִי שֶׁיָרְדוּ עָלָיו גְּשָׁמִים, אֲפִלּוּ אַב הַטֻּמְאָה — אֵינָן בְּכִי יֻתַּן. וְאִם נִעֵר — בְּכִי יֻתַּן. עָמַד תַּחַת הַצִּנּוֹר לְהָקֵר אוֹ לִדּוֹחַ, בַּטָּמֵא — טְמֵאִין, וּבַטָּהוֹר — בְּכִי יֻתַּן.
[Regarding] someone upon whom rain fell, even if [he is] an av hatumah, [the water] is not included in [the law of] ”if [wa-ter] is placed.” But if he shook [it off], [the water is] included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.”
[If] he stood under a pipe to cool off or to rinse [himself], in the case of a tamei [person], [the water] is tamei. And in the case of a tahor [person], [the water] is included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.”
Machshirin4: 3
הַכּוֹפֶה קְעָרָה עַל הַכֹּתֶל בִּשְׁבִיל שֶׁתִּדּוֹחַ — הֲרֵי זֶה בְּכִי יֻתַּן. אִם בִּשְׁבִיל שֶׁלֹּא יִלְקֶה הַכֹּתֶל — אֵינָן בְּכִי יֻתַּן.
[Regarding] one who turns over a dish on top of a wall so that it will be rinsed, this [water] is included in [the law of] ”if [wa-ter] is placed.” If [he turns over the dish] so that the wall should not be damaged, [the water] is not included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.”
Machshirin4: 4
חָבִית שֶׁיָּרַד הַדֶּלֶף לְתוֹכָהּ — בֵּית שַׁמַּאי אוֹמְרִים: יְשַׁבֵּר. בֵּית הִלֵּל אוֹמְרִים: יְעָרֶה. וּמוֹדִים שֶׁהוּא מוֹשִׁיט אֶת יָדוֹ וְנוֹטֵל פֵּרוֹת מִתּוֹכָהּ, וְהֵם טְהוֹרִים.
[Regarding] a barrel into which a leak dripped, Beis Shammai say: He [must] break [the barrel]. [But] Beis Hillel say: He [may] pour out [the water]. But they agree that he may stretch out his hand and take the produce from within [the barrel], and [the produce] is tahor.

עֲרֵבָה שֶׁיָּרַד הַדֶּלֶף לְתוֹכָהּ, הַנִּתָּזִין וְהַצָּפִין — אֵינָן בְּכִי יֻתַּן. נְטָלָהּ לְשָׁפְכָהּ — בֵּית שַׁמַּאי אוֹמְרִים: בְּכִי יֻתַּן. בֵּית הִלֵּל אוֹמְרִים: אֵינָן בְּכִי יֻתַּן. הִנִּיחָהּ שֶׁיֵּרֵד הַדֶּלֶף לְתוֹכָהּ, הַנִּתָּזִין וְהַצָּפִין — בֵּית שַׁמַּאי אוֹמְרִים: בְּכִי יֻתַּן. בֵּית הִלֵּל אוֹמְרִים: אֵינָן בְּכִי יֻתַּן. נְטָלָהּ לְשָׁפְכָהּ — אֵלּוּ וָאֵלּוּ מוֹדִים שֶׁהֵן בְּכִי יֻתַּן. הַמַּטְבִּיל אֶת הַכֵּלִים וְהַמְכַבֵּס אֶת כְּסוּתוֹ בַּמְּעָרָה, הַמַּיִם הָעוֹלִים בְּיָדָיו — בְּכִי יֻתַּן. בְּרַגְלָיו — אֵינָן בְּכִי יֻתַּן. רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר אוֹמֵר: אִם אִי אֶפְשָׁר לוֹ שֶׁיֵּרֵד אֶלָּא אִם כֵּן נִטַּנְפוּ רַגְלָיו — אַף הָעוֹלִין בְּרַגְלָיו בְּכִי יֻתַּן.
[Regarding] a bowl into which a leak dripped, [the water] that splashes and that overflows is not included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” [If] he took it in order to spill it out, Beis Shammai say: [It is] included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” [But] Beis Hillel say: It is not included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” [If] he placed [the bowl] so that the leak would drip into it, [the water] that splashes and that overflows, Beis Shammai say: [It is] included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” [But] Beis Hillel say: It is not included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” [If] he took it [in order] to spill it out, both agree that [the water] is included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.”
[Regarding] one who immerses utensils or launders his garment in a cave, the water that comes up on his hands [is] included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” [But as for the water that comes up] on his feet, it is not included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.” R’ Elazar says: If it is impossible for him to descend unless his feet become wet, [then] even [the water] that comes up on his feet [is] included in [the law of] ”if [water] is placed.”

קֻפָּה שֶׁהִיא מְלֵאָה תֻּרְמוֹסִין, וּנְתָנוּהָ לְתוֹךְ מִקְוֶה — מוֹשִׁיט יָדוֹ וְנוֹטֵל תֻּרְמוֹסִין מִתּוֹכָהּ, וְהֵם טְהוֹרִים. הֶעֱלָם מִן הַמַּיִם, הַנּוֹגְעִים בַּקֻּפָּה — טְמֵאִים, וּשְׁאָר כָּל הַתֻּרְמוֹסִים — טְהוֹרִים. צְנוֹן שֶׁבַּמְּעָרָה — נִדָּה מַדִּיחַתּוּ וְהוּא טָהוֹר. הֶעֱלַתּוּ כָּל שֶׁהוּא מִן הַמַּיִם — טָמֵא.
[Regarding] a basket that is filled with turmosin and one placed it in a mikveh, he may stretch out his hand and take turmosin from within [the basket], and [yet] they are tahor. [If] he removed [the turmosin] from the water, those that touch the bas-ket are tamei, but [as for] the rest of the turmosin, they are tahor. [Regarding] a radish in a cave, a niddah may rinse it and [yet] it is tahor. [If] she lifts it even a little bit from the water, [it is] tamei.
