קַייְטָא שֶׁיֶּשׁ בָּהּ פִּסְפָּסִים צְבוּעִים וּלְבָנִים, פּוֹשִׂין מִזֶּה לָזֶה. שָׁאֲלוּ אֶת רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר: “וַהֲרֵי הוּא פִּסְפָּס יָחִיד?“ אָמַר לָהֶן: “לֹֹא שָׁמַעְתִּי.“ אָמַר לוֹ רַבִּי יְהוּדָה בֶּן בְּתֵירָא: “אֲלַמֵּד בּוֹ.“ אָמַר לוֹ: “אִם לְקַיֵּם דִבְרֵי חֲכָמִים, הֵן.“ אָמַר לוֹ: “שֶׁמָּא יַעֲמוֹד בּוֹ שְׁנֵי שָׁבוּעוֹת, וְהָעוֹמֵד בַּבְּגָדִים שְׁנֵי שָׁבוּעוֹת טָמֵא.“ אָמַר לוֹ: “חָכָם גָּדוֹל אַתָּה שֶׁקִּיַּמְתָּ דִּבְרֵי חֲכָמִים.“
הַפִּשְׂיוֹן הַסָּמוּךְ, כָּל שֶׁהוּא. הָרָחוֹק, כִּגְרִיס. וְהַחוֹזֵר, כִּגְרִיס.
[On] a coat that has colored and white parts, [the white parts] expand from one to another. R’ Eliezer was asked: ‘‘What if there is only one [white] section?’’ He said to them: ‘‘I was not taught.’’ R’ Yehudah ben Beseira said to him: ‘‘I can expound on this [subject].’’ He said to him: ‘‘If it is to uphold the words of the Sages, you may.’’ He said to him: ‘‘Perhaps it will remain the same for two weeks, and clothing that remains the same for two weeks is tamei.’’ He said to him: ‘‘You are a great scholar, for you have upheld the words of the Sages.’’
Contiguous expansion may be of any size. Distant [expansion] must be the size of a gris, and returning [expansion] must be the size of a gris.
Negaim11: 8
הַשְּׁתִי וְהָעֵרֶב מִטַּמְּאִים בִּנְגָעִים מִיָּד. רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר: הַשֶּׁתִי מִשֶּׁיִּשָּׁלֵק, וְהָעֵרֶב מִיָּד, וְהָאוּנִין שֶׁל פִּשְׁתָּן מִשֶּׁיִּתְלַבְּנוּ. כַּמָה יְהֵא בַּפְּקַעַת וּתְהֵא מִטַּמְּאָה בִּנְגָעִים? כְּדֵי לֶאֱרֹג מִמֶּנָּה שָׁלֹֹשׁ עַל שָׁלֹֹשׁ, שְׁתִי וָעֵרֶב, אֲפִילּוּ כֻלָּהּ שֶׁתִי, אֲפִילּוּ כֻלָּהּ עֵרֶב. הָיְתָה פְּסִיקוֹת, אֵינָהּ מִטַּמְּאָה בִנְגָעִים. רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר: אֲפִילּוּ פְסִיקָה אַחַת וּקְשָׁרָהּ, אֵינָהּ מִטַּמְּאָה.
The warp and the weft [threads] are immediately susceptible to negaim. R’ Yehudah says: The warp [is susceptible only] from the time it is boiled, the weft immediately, and spun threads of linen from when they are bleached. How much [yarn] must be on the spool to be susceptible to negaim? Enough to weave from it three by three [fingerwidths], warp and weft, even if it is all warp thread or all weft thread. [If the thread] is disconnected, it does not become tamei with negaim. R’ Yehudah says: Even [if] it is split only once and he tied it, it does not become tamei.
Negaim11: 9
הַמַּעֲלֶה מִן הַפְּקַעַת לַחֲבֶרְתָּהּ, מִן הַסְּלִיל לַחֲבֵרוֹ, מִן הַכֹּבֶד הָעֶלְיוֹנָה לַכֹּבֶד הַתַּחְתּוֹנָה; וְכֵן שְׁנֵי דַפֵּי חָלוּק שֶׁנִּרְאֶה נֶגַע בְּאֶחָד מֵהֶן, הֲרֵי הַשֵּׁנִי טָהוֹר. בְּנֶפֶשׁ הַמַּסֶּכֶת וּבַשְּׁתִי הָעוֹמֵד, הֲרֵי אֵלּוּ מִטַּמְּאִין בִּנְגָעִים מִיָּד. רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אוֹמֵר: הַשְּׁתִי, אִם הָיָה רָצוּף, מִטַּמֵּא.
When [thread] is rolled from one skein to another, from one spool to another, or from the upper beam to the lower beam, or when two sides of a shirt [that are attached by a single thread] and a nega appears on one side, the second side is tahor. [If a nega appears on the weft thread when it is] inside the shed [lit., in the soul of the loom] or on warp ready [for weaving], they become tamei with negaim immediately. R’ Shimon says: Only if the warp is close together does it become tamei.
Negaim11: 10
נִרְאָה בַּשְּׁתִי הָעוֹמֵד, הָאָרִיג טָהוֹר. נִרְאָה בָאָרִיג, הַשְּׁתִי הָעוֹמֵד טָהוֹר. נִרְאָה בַסָּדִין, שׂוֹרֵף אֶת הַנִּימִין. נִרְאָה בַנִּימִין, הַסָּדִין טָהוֹר. חָלוּק שֶׁנִּרְאָה בוֹ נֶגַע, מַצִּיל אֶת הָאֻמְרִיּוֹת שֶׁבּוֹ, אֲפִלּוּ הֵן אַרְגָּמָן.
[If the nega] appears on the warp that is ready [for weaving], the woven part is tahor. [If] it appears on the woven part, the warp that is ready [for weaving] is tahor. [If] it appears on a sheet, the fringes must be burnt. [If] it appears on the fringes, the sheet is tahor. A nega on a shirt does not make its trim tamei, even if they are red wool.
Negaim11: 11
כָּל הָרָאוּי לִטַּמֵּא טְמֵא מֵת, אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁאֵינוֹ רָאוּי לִטַּמֵּא מִדְרָס, מִטַּמֵּא בִנְגָעִים — כְּגוֹן קֶלַע שֶׁל סְפִינָה, וּוִילוֹן, וְשָׁבִיס שֶׁל סְבָכָה, וּמִטְפָּחוֹת שֶׁל סְפָרִים, וְגַלְגִּלּוֹן, וּרְצוּעוֹת שֶׁל מִנְעָל וְסַנְדָּל שֶׁיֶּשׁ בָּהֶן רֹחַב כִּגְרִיס — הֲרֵי אֵלּוּ מִטַּמְּאִין בִּנְגָּעִים. סָגוֹס שֶׁנִּרְאָה בוֹ נֶגַע, רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר בֶּן יַעֲקֹב אוֹמֵר: עַד שֶׁיֵּרָאֶה בָּאָרִיג וּבַמּוֹכִין. הַחֵמֶת וְהַתּוּרְמֵל נִרְאִין כְּדַרְכָּן. וּפוֹשֶׂה מִתּוֹכוֹ לַאֲחוֹרָיו וּמֵאֲחוֹרָיו לְתוֹכוֹ.
Anything susceptible to become tamei from a corpse, even if it is not susceptible to tumah of midras, becomes tamei from negaim — such as the sail of a ship, a curtain, the decorative part of a hairnet, covers of scrolls, and a string-belt or straps of a shoe or a sandal that are wide as a gris — all these can become tamei from negaim.
A sagos on which a nega appeared, R’ Eliezer ben Yaakov says: [It is tamei] only when [the nega] appears on both the woven material and the tuft. A flask and a sack are examined as they usually are. [A nega] can spread from inside out or from outside in.
Negaim11: 12
בֶּגֶד הַמֻסְגָּר שֶׁנִּתְעָרֵב בַּאֲחֵרִים, כֻּלָּן טְהוֹרִים. קְצָצוֹ וַעֲשָׂאוֹ מוֹכִין, טָהוֹר, וּמוּתָּר בַּהֲנָיָתוֹ. וְהַמּוּחְלָט שֶׁנִּתְעָרֵב בַּאֲחֵרִים, כּוּלָם טְמֵאִין. קְצָצוֹ וַעֲשָׂאוֹ מוֹכִין, טָמֵא וְאָסוּר בַּהֲנָיָתוֹ.
[If] a confined garment became mixed up with others, they are all tahor. [If a confined garment] was [partially] shredded, it is tahor, and one is permitted to benefit from it. [If] a confirmed [garment] became mixed up with others, they are all tamei. [If a confirmed tamei garment] was [partially] shredded, it is tamei and one is prohibited to benefit from it.
Negaim12: 1
כָּל הַבָּתִּים מִטַּמְּאִין בִּנְגָעִים חוּץ מִשֶּׁל עוֹבְדֵי כּוֹכָבִים. הַלּוֹקֵחַ בָּתִּים מִן הָעוֹבְדֵי כּוֹכָבִים יֵרָאוּ בִתְּחִלָּה. בַּיִת עָגוֹל, בַּיִת טְרִיגוֹן, בַּיִת הַבָּנוּי בִסְפִינָה, אוֹ בְאַסְקַרְיָא, עַל אַרְבַּע קוֹרוֹת, אֵינוֹ מִטַּמֵּא בִּנְגָעִים. וְאִם הָיָה מְרֻבָּע, אֲפִלּוּ עַל אַרְבָּעָה עַמּוּדִים, מִטַּמֵּא.
All houses become tamei from negaim except those of gentiles. Houses acquired from a gentile should be examined initially. A round house, a triangular house, a house built on a ship, or on a mast, [or] on four [horizontal] beams do not become tamei from negaim. But if it was four-sided, even if it is on four [vertical] pillars, it becomes tamei.
Negaim12: 2
בַּיִת שֶׁאֶחָד מִצְּדָדָיו מְחֻפֶּה בְשַׁיִשׁ, אֶחָד בְּסֶלַע, וְאֶחָד בִּלְבֵנִים, וְאֶחָד בְּעָפָר, טָהוֹר. בַּיִת שֶׁלֹּא הָיוּ בוֹ אֲבָנִים וְעֵצִים וְעָפָר וְנִרְאָה בוֹ נֶגַע, וְאַחַר כָּךְ הֵבִיאוּ בוֹ אֲבָנִים וְעֵצִים וְעָפָר, טָהוֹר.
וְכֵן בֶּגֶד שֶׁלֹּא אָרַג בּוֹ שָׁלֹֹשׁ עַל שָׁלֹֹשׁ וְנִרְאָה בוֹ נֶגַע, וְאַחַר כָּךְ אָרַג בּוֹ שָׁלֹֹשׁ עַל שָׁלֹֹשׁ, טָהוֹר. אֵין הַבַּיִת מִטַּמֵּא בִנְגָעִים עַד שֶׁיְּהֵא בוֹ אֲבָנִים וְעֵצִים וְעָפָר.
A house that one of its sides is covered with marble, or with bedrock, bricks, or earth, is tahor. A house that did not have stones, wood, and clay when a nega appeared on it, and then they built [lit., brought] into it stones, wood, and clay, is tahor.
Similarly, a nega that appeared on a garment that was not three [fingerbreadths] by three [fingerbreadths], and then he wove it [to be] three [fingerbreadths] by three [fingerbreadths], is tahor. A house does not become tamei from negaim unless it contains stones, wood, and clay.
Negaim12: 3
וְכַמָּה אֲבָנִים יְהוּ בוֹ? רַבִּי יִשְׁמָעֵאל אוֹמֵר: אַרְבַּע. רַבִּי עֲקִיבָא אוֹמֵר: שְׁמוֹנֶה. שֶׁהָיָה רַבִּי יִשְׁמָעֵאל אוֹמֵר: עַד שֶׁיֵּרָאֶה כִּשְׁנֵי גְרִיסִין עַל שְׁתֵּי אֲבָנִים אוֹ עַל אֶבֶן אַחַת. רַבִּי עֲקִיבָא אוֹמֵר: עַד שֶׁיֵּרָאֶה כִּשְׁנֵי גְרִיסִין עַל שְׁתֵּי אֲבָנִים, לֹֹא עַל אֶבֶן אַחַת. רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר בְּרַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אוֹמֵר: עַד שֶׁיֵּרָאֶה כִּשְׁנֵי גְרִיסִין עַל שְׁתֵּי אֲבָנִים בִּשְׁנֵי כְתָלִים בַּזָּוִית, אָרְכּוֹ כִּשְׁנֵי גְרִיסִין וְרָחְבוֹ כִּגְרִיס.
How many stones must [the house] have? R’ Yishmael says: Four. R’ Akiva says: Eight. For R’ Yishmael used to say: Until it is the size of two gris on two stones or one stone. R’ Akiva says: Until it is the size of two gris on two stones, not on one stone.
R’ Eliezer bar R’ Shimon says: Until it appears the size of two gris on two stones on two adjacent walls, two gris long and one gris wide.
Negaim12: 4
עֵצִים כְּדֵי לִיתֵּן תַּחַת הַשְּׁקוֹף. רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר: כְּדֵי לַעֲשׂוֹת סַנְדָּל לַאֲחוֹרֵי הַשְּׁקוֹף. עָפָר כְּדֵי לִיתֵּן בֵּין פַּצִּים לַחֲבֵרוֹ.
קִירוֹת הָאֵבוּס וְקִירוֹת הַמְּחִיצָה אֵינָן מִטַּמְּאִין בִּנְגָעִים. יְרוּשָׁלַיִם וְחוּצָה לָאָרֶץ אֵינָן מִטַּמְּאִין בִּנְגָעִים.
Wood — enough to build a threshold. R’ Yehudah says: Enough to make a ‘‘sandal’’ behind the threshold. Clay — enough to put between the cracks.
Walls of a feeding trough and partition walls do not become tamei from negaim. Jerusalem and outside the Land [of Israel] do not become tamei from negaim.
Negaim12: 5
כֵּיצַד רְאִיַּת הַבַּיִת? “וּבָא אֲשֶׁר לוֹ הַבַּיִת וְהִגִּיד לַכֹּהֵן לֵאמֹר ‘כְּנֶגַע נִרְאֶה לִי בַּבָּיִת.‘ “ אֲפִלּוּ תַּלְמִיד חָכָם וְיוֹדֵעַ שֶׁהוּא נֶגַע וַדַּאי, לֹֹא יִגְזוֹר וְיֹאמַר: “נֶגַע נִרְאָה לִי בַּבָּיִת,|negru|“ אֶלָּא “כְּנֶגַע נִרְאָה לִי בַּבָּיִת.|negru|“ “וְצִוָּה הַכֹּהֵן וּפִנּוּ אֶת הַבַּיִת (וּבְטֶרֶם יָבֹא הַכֹּהֵן לִרְאוֹת אֶת הַנֶּגַע וְלֹֹא יִטְמָא כָּל אֲשֶׁר בַּבָּיִת. וְאַחַר כָּךְ יָבֹא הַכֹּהֵן לִרְאוֹת אֶת הַבָּיִת)|negru|“ — וַאֲפִלּוּ חֲבִילֵי עֵצִים, וַאֲפִלּוּ חֲבִילֵי קָנִים, דִּבְרֵי רַבִּי יְהוּדָה. רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אוֹמֵר: עֵסֶק הוּא לַפִּנּוּי? אָמַר רַבִּי מֵאִיר: וְכִי מַה מִּטַּמֵּא לוֹ? אִם תֹּאמַר כְּלֵי עֵצָיו, וּבְגָדָיו, וּמַתְּכוֹתָיו, מַטְבִּילָן וְהֵן טְהוֹרִים. עַל מֶה חָסָה הַתּוֹרָה? עַל כְּלֵי חַרְסוֹ, וְעַל פַּכּוֹ, וְעַל טִפְיוֹ. אִם כָּךְ חָסָה הַתּוֹרָה עַל מָמוֹנוֹ הַבָּזוּי, קַל וָחֹמֶר עַל מָמוֹנוֹ הֶחָבִיב; אִם כָּךְ עַל מָמוֹנוֹ, קַל וָחֹמֶר עַל נֶפֶשׁ בָּנָיו וּבְנוֹתָיו. אִם כָּךְ עַל שֶׁל רָשָׁע, קַל וָחֹמֶר עַל שֶׁל צַדִּיק.
. Wood — enough to build a threshold. R’ Yehudah says: Enough to make a ‘‘sandal’’ behind the threshold. Clay — enough to put between the cracks.
Walls of a feeding trough and partition walls do not become tamei from negaim. Jerusalem and outside the Land [of Israel] do not become tamei from negaim.
Suggestions
