What is [the difference] between merkav and moshav? [With regard to] merkav, touching it is different than carrying it, but [with regard to] moshav, touching it is no different than carrying it. A packsaddle of a donkey that one sits upon is tahor. [If] one changed the [number of] holes, or opened [the holes] one into the other, it is tamei.

The bier, pillow, and mattress of a corpse, these [can become] tamei [with] midras [tumah]. A bridal chair, a birthing stool of a woman in childbirth, and a launderer’s seat upon which he stacks the clothing, R’ Yose said: These are not subject to [the tumah of] moshav.

A fishing net is tamei on account of the bottom. Nets, traps, a bird snare, a wooden snare, and fishermen’s traps are tamei. A fish trap, a bird trap, and a bird cage are tahor.

There are three shields: A bent shield [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with midras [tumah]. [A shield] with which [combatants] play on the sporting grounds [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with corpse-tumah. And the play-shield of Arabs is tahor from any [form of tumah].

There are three wagons: [A wagon] made like a katedra [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with midras [tumah]. [A wagon made] like a bed [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with corpse-tumah. And [a wagon made for the transportation] of stones is tahor from any [form of tumah].

There are three troughs: A trough [with a capacity of] between two logs and nine kavs that developed a crack [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with midras [tumah]. An intact [trough is susceptible to becoming] tamei with corpse-tumah. And [a trough] of great proportions is tahor from any [form of tumah].

There are three chests: A chest whose opening is on its side [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with midras [tumah]. [A chest whose opening is] on top [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with corpse-tumah. And [a chest] of great proportions is tahor from any [form of tumah].

There are three tarbusin: [The tarbus] of a bloodletter [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with midras [tumah]. [A tarbus] on which people eat [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with corpse-tumah. And [a tarbus] of olives is tahor from any [form of tumah].

There are three bases: [That] which is in front of a bed and [that] which is in front of scribes [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with midras [tumah]. [That] of a delufki [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with corpse-tumah. And [that] of a cabinet is tahor from any [form of tumah].

There are three pinkases: An aphiphorin [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with midras [tumah]. [A pinkas] that has a receptacle for wax [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with corpse-tumah. And a smooth [pinkas] is tahor from any [form of tumah].

There are three beds: [A bed] that is designed for lying on [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with midras [tumah]. [A bed] of glassware manufacturers [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with corpse-tumah. And [the bed] of net makers is tahor from any [form of tumah].

There are three mashpeles-containers: [A mashpeles-container] for manure [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with midras tumah. [One used] for straw [is susceptible to becoming tamei] with corpse-tumah. And a puchlatz of camels is tahor from any [form of tumah].

T here are three mats: [A mat] designed for sitting [on is susceptible to becoming] tamei with midras tumah. [A mat] of dyers [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with corpse-tumah. And [the mat] of presses is tahor from any [form of tumah].

There are three waterskins and three shepherd’s pouches: [Those] that can contain the prescribed amount [are susceptible to becoming] tamei with midras tumah. [Those] that cannot contain the prescribed amount [are susceptible to becoming] tamei with corpse-tumah. And [those made] of fish skin are tahor from any [form of tumah].

There are three [animal] hides: [A hide] designed for use as a rug [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with midras tumah. [A hide used] as a wrapping for utensils [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with corpse-tumah. And [a hide intended for use] as straps or as sandals is tahor from any [form of tumah].

There are three sheets: [A sheet] that is designed for lying [on is susceptible to becoming] tamei with midras tumah. [A sheet that is designed for use] as a curtain [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with corpse-tumah. And [a sheet] of pictures is tahor from any [form of tumah].

There are three towels: [A towel] for hands [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with midras tumah. [A towel used] for scrolls [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with corpse- tumah. And [one used] for shrouds or for the lyres of the Levites is tahor from any [form of tumah].

There are three gauntlets: [The gauntlet] of hunters of animals and birds [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with midras tumah. [The gauntlet used] for locust [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with corpse-tumah. And [the gauntlet] of summer fruit-dryers is tahor from any [form of tumah].

There are three hairnets. [The hairnet] of a young woman [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with midras tumah. [The hairnet] of an old woman [is susceptible to becoming] tamei with corpse-tumah. And [the hairnet] of one who goes out is tahor from any [form of tumah].

There are three boxes: [Regarding] a worn-out [box] that one patched onto a sound one, we follow [the status of] the sound one. [If one patched] a small [box] onto a large one, we follow [the status of] the large one. [If] they were equal, we follow [the status of] the interior [box]. R’ Shimon says: [Regarding] the pan of a balance scale that one patched onto the bottom of a boiler, [if he patched it] on the inner surface [of the boiler, the boiler is] tamei. [But if he attached it] on the outer surface [of the boiler, the boiler is] tahor. [If] one patched [the pan] onto the side of [the boiler], whether on the inner surface or the outer surface, it is tahor.

All utensils have an exterior and an interior, such as pillows, mattresses, sacks, and martzufin; [these are] the words of R’ Yehudah. R’ Meir says: Any [utensil] that has loops has an exterior and an interior. [But] any [utensil] that does not have loops does not have an exterior and an interior. A table and a delufki have an exterior and an interior; [these are] the words of R’ Yehudah. [But] R’ Meir says: They have no exterior. And so too a tray without a rim.
