עוֹבֵד כּוֹכָבִים שֶׁנִּמְצָא עוֹמֵד בְּצַד הַבּוֹר שֶׁל יַיִן, אִם יֶשׁ לוֹ עָלָיו מִלְוָה — אָסוּר; אֵין לוֹ [עָלָיו מִלְוָה] — מֻתָּר. נָפַל לַבּוֹר וְעָלָה, וּמְדָדוֹ בַקָּנֶה, הִתִּיז אֶת הַצִּרְעָה בַקָּנֶה, אוֹ שֶׁהָיָה מְטַפֵּחַ עַל פִּי חָבִית מְרֻתַּחַת — בְּכָל אֵלּוּ הָיָה מַעֲשֶׂה, וְאָמְרוּ: יִמָּכֵר. וְרַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן מַתִּיר. נָטַל אֶת הֶחָבִית וּזְרָקָהּ [בַּחֲמָתוֹ] לַבּוֹר — זֶה הָיָה מַעֲשֶׂה, וְהִכְשִׁירוּ.
[If] an idolater was found standing beside a wine cistern: if he has a lien (lit., a loan) upon it, it is prohibited; if he does not have a lien upon it, it is permitted. [If] he fell into the cistern and came out, or he measured it with a reed, [or] he flicked out a hornet with the reed, or if he was tapping on top of a foaming barrel —- all these [cases] were actual incidents, and they said it should be sold. R’ Shimon, however, permits. [If] he took a barrel and threw it in his anger into the cistern, this was [once] an incident and they declared [it] fit.

הַמְטַהֵר יֵינוֹ שֶׁל עוֹבֵד כּוֹכָבִים וְנוֹתְנוֹ בִרְשׁוּתוֹ בְּבַיִת הַפָּתוּחַ לִרְשׁוּת הָרַבִּים, בְּעִיר שֶׁיֶּשׁ בָּהּ עוֹבְדֵי כּוֹכָבִים וְיִשְׂרְאֵלִים — מֻתָּר. בְּעִיר שֶׁכֻּלָּהּ עוֹבְדֵי כּוֹכָבִים — אָסוּר, עַד שֶׁיּוֹשִׁיב שׁוֹמֵר. וְאֵין הַשּׁוֹמֵר צָרִיךְ לִהְיוֹת יוֹשֵׁב וּמְשַׁמֵּר. אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁהוּא יוֹצֵא וְנִכְנָס — מֻתָּר. רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן אֶלְעָזָר אוֹמֵר: [כָּל] רְשׁוּת עוֹבְדֵי כּוֹכָבִים — אַחַת הִיא.
[If] one prepares an idolater’s wine in purity, and he places it in his domain in a house which opens onto a public domain —- [if it is] in a city which has idolaters and Jews in it, it is permitted; [but] in a city which is entirely idol worshipers, it is forbid-den, unless he appoints a watchman. The watch- man need not be constantly present and guarding —- even if he leaves and returns, it is permitted. R’ Shimon ben Elazar says: All idolatrous domains are one.

הַמְטַהֵר יֵינוֹ שֶׁל עוֹבֵד כּוֹכָבִים וְנוֹתְנוֹ בִרְשׁוּתוֹ, וְהַלָּה כוֹתֵב לוֹ: הִתְקַבַּלְתִּי מִמְּךָ מָעוֹת — מֻתָּר. אֲבָל אִם יִרְצֶה יִשְׂרָאֵל לְהוֹצִיאוֹ, וְאֵינוֹ מַנִּיחוֹ עַד שֶׁיִּתֶּן לוֹ אֶת מְעוֹתָיו — זֶה הָיָה מַעֲשֶׂה בְבֵית שְׁאָן, וְאָסְרוּ חֲכָמִים.
[If] one prepares an idolater’s wine in purity and places it in his domain, and this one writes to him, “I have received [the] money from you” —- it is permitted. But if the Jew would want to remove it, and he does not allow him [to do so] until he gives him his money —- this was [once] an incident in Beis Shean, and the Sages forbade [it].

הַשּׂוֹכֵר אֶת הַפּוֹעֵל לַעֲשׂוֹת עִמּוֹ בְיֵין נֶסֶךְ — שְׂכָרוֹ אָסוּר. שְׂכָרוֹ לַעֲשׂוֹת עִמּוֹ מְלָאכָה אַחֶרֶת, אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁאָמַר לוֹ הַעֲבֵר לִי חָבִית שֶׁל יֵין נֶסֶךְ מִמָּקוֹם לְמָקוֹם — שְׂכָרוֹ מֻתָּר. הַשׂוֹכֵר אֶת הַחֲמוֹר לְהָבִיא עָלֶיהָ יֵין נֶסֶךְ — שְׂכָרָהּ אָסוּר. שְׂכָרָהּ לֵישֵׁב עָלֶיהָ, אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁהִנִּיחַ הָעוֹבֵד כּוֹכָבִים לְגִינוֹ עָלֶיהָ — שְׂכָרָהּ מֻתָּר.
[If] one hires a worker to assist him with nesech-wine, his wage is prohibited. [But if] he hired him to assist him with different work, even though he said to him, “Move a barrel of nesech-wine for me from place to place” —- his wage is permitted. [If] one hired a donkey to transport nesech-wine on it, its rental fee is prohibited; [if] he hired it to sit upon, even though the idolater placed his flagon upon it, its rental fee is permitted.

יֵין נֶסֶךְ שֶׁנָּפַל עַל גַּבֵּי עֲנָבִים — יְדִיחֵן, וְהֵן מֻתָּרוֹת. וְאִם הָיוּ מְבֻקָּעוֹת — אֲסוּרוֹת. [נָפַל עַל גַבֵּי תְאֵנִים אוֹ עַל גַּבֵּי תְמָרִים, אִם יֵשׁ בָּהֶן בְּנוֹתֵן טַעַם — אָסוּר.] מַעֲשֶׂה בְּבַיְתוֹס בֶּן זוֹנִין שֶׁהֵבִיא גְרוֹגְרוֹת בִּסְפִינָה, וְנִשְׁתַּבְּרָה חָבִית שֶׁל יֵין נֶסֶךְ וְנָפַל עַל גַבֵּיהֶן, וְשָׁאַל לַחֲכָמִים, וְהִתִּירוּם. זֶה הַכְּלָל: כֹּל שֶׁבַּהֲנָאָתוֹ בְּנוֹתֵן טַעַם — אָסוּר. כֹּל שֶׁאֵין בַּהֲנָאָתוֹ בְּנוֹתֵן טַעַם — מֻתָּר, כְּגוֹן חֹמֶץ שֶׁנָּפַל עַל גַּבֵּי גְרִיסִין.
[If] nesech-wine fell onto grapes, he should rinse them off and they are permitted; but if they were cracked, they are prohib-ited. [If] it fell onto dates or onto figs, if there is [enough] in them to give taste —- it is prohibited. There was an incident in which Boethus the son of Zonin brought dried figs by boat, and a barrel of nesech-wine broke and [the wine] fell onto them; and he asked the Sages and they permitted them. This is the rule: Anything that contributes to his enjoyment by the flavor it imparts is prohibited; anything that does not contribute to his enjoyment by the flavor it imparts is permitted —- such as vinegar which fell onto chopped beans.

עוֹבֵד כּוֹכָבִים שֶׁהָיָה מַעֲבִיר עִם יִשְׂרָאֵל כַּדֵּי יַיִן מִמָּקוֹם לְמָקוֹם, אִם הָיָה בְחֶזְקַת הַמִּשְׁתַּמֵּר — מֻתָּר. אִם הוֹדִיעוֹ שֶׁהוּא מַפְלִיג — כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּשְׁתֹּם וְיִסְתֹּם וְיִגּוֹב. רַבָּן שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן גַּמְלִיאֵל אוֹמֵר: כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּפְתַּח וְיִגֹּף וְתִגֹּב.
An idolater was helping a Jew to transport casks of wine from place to place —- if there was a state of supervision, it is per-mitted. If he informed him that he was going far —- [it is prohibited] if there was time for him to puncture, patch, and allow it to dry. Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel says: [Only] if there was time for him to open, apply a [new] seal, and allow it to dry.

הַמַּנִּיחַ יֵינוֹ בַקָּרוֹן אוֹ בַסְּפִינָה וְהָלַךְ לוֹ בְקַפַּנְדַּרְיָא, נִכְנַס לַמְּדִינָה וְרָחַץ — מֻתָּר. אִם הוֹדִיעוֹ שֶׁהוּא מַפְלִיג — כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּשְׁתֹּם וְיִסְתֹּם וְיִגֹּב. רַבָּן שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן גַּמְלִיאֵל אוֹמֵר: כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּפְתַּח וְיִגֹּף וְתִגֹּב. הַמַּנִּיחַ עוֹבֵד כּוֹכָבִים בַּחֲנוּת, אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁהוּא יוֹצֵא וְנִכְנָס — מֻתָּר. וְאִם הוֹדִיעוֹ שֶׁהוּא מַפְלִיג — כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּשְׁתֹּם וְיִסְתֹּם וְיִגֹּב. רַבָּן שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן גַּמְלִיאֵל אוֹמֵר: כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּפְתַּח וְיִגֹּף וְתִגֹּב.
[If] one left his wine in a wagon or boat, and he went by a shortcut, [and] entered the city and bathed —- it is permitted. If he informed him that he was going far —- [it is prohibited] if there was time for him to puncture, patch, and allow it to dry. [If] one leaves an idolater in a store, even though he goes in and out, it is permitted. Avodah Zarah5: 5
הָיָה אוֹכֵל עִמּוֹ עַל הַשֻּׁלְחָן וְהִנִּיחַ לְגִינָה עַל הַשֻּׁלְחָן, וּלְגִינָה עַל הַדֻּלְבְּקִי, וְהִנִּיחוֹ וְיָצָא, מַה שֶּׁעַל הַשֻּׁלְחָן — אָסוּר, וּמַה שֶּׁעַל הַדֻּלְבְּקִי — מֻתָּר. וְאִם אָמַר לוֹ: הֱוֵי מוֹזֵג וְשׁוֹתֶה — אַף שֶׁעַל הַדֻּלְבְּקִי אָסוּר. חָבִיּוֹת פְּתוּחוֹת — אֲסוּרוֹת; סְתוּמוֹת — כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּפְתַּח וְיִגֹּף וְתִגֹּב.
[If] he was eating with him at the [dining] table, and he left a flagon on the [dining] table and a flagon on the side table, and he left him and went out —-what is on the [dining] table is prohibited, but what is on the side table is permitted. But if he said to him, “Pour and drink,” even what is on the side table is prohibited. Open barrels are prohibited. Sealed [barrels are prohibited only] if there was the time that it takes him to open, apply a [new] seal, and allow it to dry.
Avodah Zarah5: 6
בַּלֶּשֶׁת עוֹבְדֵי כּוֹכָבִים שֶׁנִּכְנְסָה לָעִיר בִּשְׁעַת שָׁלוֹם, חָבִיּוֹת פְּתוּחוֹת — אֲסוּרוֹת; סְתוּמוֹת — מֻתָּרוֹת. בִּשְׁעַת מִלְחָמָה — אֵלּוּ וָאֵלּוּ מֻתָּרוֹת, לְפִי שֶׁאֵין פְּנַאי לְנַסֵּךְ.
[If] a troop of idolater soldiers entered the city —- in peacetime, open barrels are prohibited [while] sealed ones are permit-ted; in wartime, both are permitted because there is no time to perform libation.

אֻמָּנִין שֶׁל יִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁשָּׁלַח לָהֶם עוֹבֵד כּוֹכָבִים חָבִית שֶׁל יֵין נֶסֶךְ בִּשְׂכָרָן, מֻתָּרִים לוֹמַר לוֹ: ”תֶּן לָנוּ אֶת דָּמֶיהָ”. [וְאִם] מִשֶּׁנִּכְנְסָה לִרְשׁוּתָן — אָסוּר. הַמּוֹכֵר יֵינוֹ לעוֹבֵד כּוֹכָבִים, פָּסַק עַד שֶׁלֹּא מָדַד — דָּמָיו מֻתָּרִין; מָדַד עַד שֶׁלֹּא פָסַק — דָּמָיו אֲסוּרִין. נָטַל אֶת הַמַּשְׁפֵּךְ וּמָדַד לְתוֹךְ צְלוֹחִיתוֹ שֶׁל עוֹבֵד כּוֹכָבִים וְחָזַר וּמָדַד לְתוֹךְ צְלוֹחִיתוֹ שֶׁל יִשְׂרָאֵל, אִם יֶשׁ בּוֹ עַכֶּבֶת יַיִן — אָסוּר. הַמְעָרֶה מִכֶּלִי אֶל כֶּלִי, אֶת שֶׁעֵרָה מִמֶּנּוּ — מֻתָּר, וְאֶת שֶׁעֵרָה לְתוֹכוֹ — אָסוּר.
Jewish workers, to whom an idolater sent a barrel of nesech-wine as their wage, are permitted to say to him, “Give us its monetary value”; but after it enters their domain, it is prohibited. [If] one sells his wine to an idolater —- if he sets the price before he measures [it] out, its payment is permitted; [if] he measures [it] out before he sets the price, its payment is prohibited. [If] he took a funnel and measured [wine] into an idolater’s flask, and then measured into a Jew’s flask —- if it has a wine retainer in it, it is prohibited. [If] one pours from one container to another container —- the one from which he poured is permitted; and the one into which he poured is prohibited.
Avodah Zarah5: 8
יֵין נֶסֶךְ אָסוּר, וְאוֹסֵר בְּכָל שֶׁהוּא. יַיִן בְּיַיִן וּמַיִם בְּמַיִם — בְּכָל שֶׁהוּא. יַיִן בְּמַיִם וּמַיִם בְּיַיִן — בְּנוֹתֵן טַעַם. זֶה הַכְּלָל: מִין בְּמִינוֹ — בְּמַשֶּׁהוּ. וְשֶׁלֹּא בְמִינוֹ — בְּנוֹתֵן טַעַם.
Nesech-wine is prohibited, and it prohibits [that with which it mixes] by the smallest quantity. Wine in wine or water in water [prohibits the mixture] by the smallest quantity. Wine in water or water in wine [prohibits only] if it imparts flavor. This is the rule: A [prohibited] substance [which mixes] into [a permitted substance of] the same kind [prohibits] by the smallest quan-tity; but [if it mixes] into [a substance of] a different kind [it prohibits only] if it imparts flavor.

אֵלּוּ אֲסוּרִין וְאוֹסְרִין בְּכָל שֶׁהֵן: יֵין נֶסֶךְ, וַעֲבוֹדָה זָרָה, וְעוֹרוֹת לְבוּבִין, וְשׁוֹר הַנִּסְקָל, וְעֶגְלָה עֲרוּפָה, וְצִפָּרֵי מְצֹרָע, וּשְׂעַר נָזִיר, וּפֶטֶר חֲמוֹר, וּבָשָׂר בֶּחָלָב, [וְשָׂעִיר הַמִּשְׁתַּלֵּחַ], וְחֻלִּין שֶׁנִּשְׁחֲטוּ בָּעֲזָרָה — הֲרֵי אֵלּוּ אֲסוּרִין, וְאוֹסְרִין בְּכָל שֶׁהֵן.
The following are prohibited, and they prohibit [that with which they mix] by any quantity: Nesech-wine, idols, heart-pierced skins, an ox which is [to be] stoned, an eglah arufah, the birds of a metzora, the hair of a nazir, the firstborn of a donkey, meat [mixed] with milk, the he-goat that is dispatched [to Azazel], and unconsecrated [animals] that were slaughtered in the [Temple] Courtyard. These are prohibited, and they prohibit [that with which they mix] by any quantity.

יֵין נֶסֶךְ שֶׁנָּפַל לַבּוֹר — כֻּלּוֹ אָסוּר בַּהֲנָאָה. רַבָּן שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן גַּמְלִיאֵל אוֹמֵר: יִמָּכֵר כֻּלּוֹ לְנָכְרִי חוּץ מִדְּמֵי יֵין נֶסֶךְ שֶׁבּוֹ.
[If] nesech-wine fell into a cistern [of ordinary wine], all of it is prohibited for benefit. Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel says: It should all be sold to a gentile except for the value of the nesech-wine that is in it.
Avodah Zarah5: 11
גַּת שֶׁל אֶבֶן שֶׁזִּפְּתָהּ עוֹבֵד כּוֹכָבִים — מְנַגְּבָהּ וְהִיא טְהוֹרָה. וְשֶׁל עֵץ — רַבִּי אוֹמֵר: יְנַגֵּב, וַחֲכָמִים אוֹמְרִים: יִקְלֹף אֶת הַזֶּפֶת. וְשֶׁל חֶרֶס, אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁקָּלַף אֶת הַזֶּפֶת הֲרֵי זוֹ אֲסוּרָה.
A stone winepress which an idolater coated with pitch —- one dries it, and it is cleansed. With a wooden [press] —- Rabbi says: He should dry [it]; but the Sages say: He must peel off the pitch. But an earthen [press], even though he peeled off the pitch, it is forbidden.
