בָּא לוֹ אֵצֶל שָׂעִיר הַמִּשְׁתַּלֵּחַ וְסוֹמֵךְ שְׁתֵּי יָדָיו עָלָיו וּמִתְוַדֶּה. וְכָךְ הָיָה אוֹמֵר: ,,אָנָּא הַשֵּׁם! עָווּ, פָּשְׁעוּ, חָטְאוּ לְפָנֶיךָ עַמְּךָ בֵית יִשְׂרָאֵל. אָנָּא בַשֵּׁם! כַּפֶּר נָא לָעֲוֹנוֹת וְלַפְּשָׁעִים וְלַחֲטָאִים, שֶׁעָווּ וְשֶׁפָּשְׁעוּ וְשֶׁחָטְאוּ לְפָנֶיךָ עַמְּךָ בֵית יִשְׂרָאֵל, כַּכָּתוּב בְּתוֹרַת משֶׁה עַבְדֶּךָ לֵאמֹר: ,כִּי-בַיּוֹם הַזֶּה יְכַפֵּר עֲלֵיכֶם לְטַהֵר אֶתְכֶם מִכֹּל חַטֹּאתֵיכֶם לִפְנֵי ה' תִּטְהָרוּ' ”.
וְהַכֹּהֲנִים וְהָעָם הָעוֹמְדִים בָּעֲזָרָה, כְּשֶׁהָיוּ שׁוֹמְעִים שֵׁם הַמְפֹרָשׁ שֶׁהוּא יוֹצֵא מִפִּי כֹהֵן גָּדוֹל, הָיוּ כוֹרְעִים וּמִשְׁתַּחֲוִים וְנוֹפְלִים עַל פְּנֵיהֶם, וְאוֹמְרִים: ,,בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם כְּבוֹד מַלְכוּתוֹ לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד”.
He [then] came to the he-goat [designated] to be sent away [to Azazel] and he supports both of his hands on it and confesses. And this is what he would say, “I beg of You, HASHEM! Your nation, the Family of Israel, has acted wickedly, rebelled, and sinned before You. I pray, with Your Name! Forgive now the wicked acts, rebellions, and the sins, for Your people, the Family of Israel, has acted wickedly, rebelled, and sinned before You, as is written in the Torah of Your servant Moses: For on this day he shall atone for you to purify you from all your sins, before HASHEM shall you be purified.” The Kohanim and the people who were standing in the Courtyard, when they heard the Ineffable Name coming out of the Kohen Gadol's mouth, they would kneel and prostrate themselves and fall upon their faces, and say, “Blessed is the Name —- the Glory of His King-ship —- forever and ever.”
Yoma6: 3
מְסָרוֹ לְמִי שֶׁהָיָה מוֹלִיכוֹ. הַכֹּל כְּשֵׁרִין לְהוֹלִיכוֹ, אֶלָּא שֶׁעָשׂוּ הַכֹּהֲנִים גְּדוֹלִים קֶבַע, וְלֹא הָיוּ מַנִּיחִין אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל לְהוֹלִיכוֹ. אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹסֵי: מַעֲשֶׂה וְהוֹלִיכוֹ עַרְסְלָא, וְיִשְׂרָאֵל הָיָה.
He handed it to the one who was to lead it [to Azazel]. Anyone is fit to lead it, but the Kohanim Gedolim established a rule, and did not permit a Yisrael to lead it. R' Yose said: It once happened that Arsela led it, and he was a Yisrael.
Yoma6: 4
וְכֶבֶשׁ עָשׂוּ לוֹ מִפְּנֵי הַבַּבְלִיִּים שֶׁהָיוּ מְתַלְּשִׁים בִּשְׂעָרוֹ, וְאוֹמְרִים לוֹ: ,,טֹל וָצֵא, טֹל וָצֵא”!
מִיַּקִּירֵי יְרוּשָׁלַיִם הָיוּ מְלַוִּין אוֹתוֹ עַד סֻכָּה הָרִאשׁוֹנָה. עֶשֶׂר סֻכּוֹת מִירוּשָׁלַיִם וְעַד צוּק, תִּשְׁעִים רִיס, שִׁבְעָה וּמֶחֱצָה לְכָל מִיל.
They made a ramp for it because of the Babylonians who used to pull at his hair and say to him, “Take and leave! Take and leave!” Some of the eminent men of Jerusalem used to accompany him to the first booth. There were ten booths from Jerusalem to [a] precipice; [it was] ninety riss, seven and a half [riss] to every mil.
Yoma6: 5
עַל כָּל סֻכָּה וְסֻכָּה אוֹמְרִים לוֹ: ,,הֲרֵי מָזוֹן וַהֲרֵי מַיִם”; וּמְלַוִּין אוֹתוֹ מִסֻּכָּה לְסֻכָּה, חוּץ מֵאַחֲרוֹנָה שֶׁבָּהֶן. שֶׁאֵינוֹ מַגִּיעַ עִמּוֹ לַצּוּק, אֶלָּא עוֹמֵד מֵרָחוֹק וְרוֹאֶה אֶת מַעֲשָׂיו.
At each booth they would say to him, “Here is food and here is drink”; and they would accompany him from [that] booth to [the next] booth, except for the last of them. For the [last] escort could not go with him [all the way] to the precipice, but would stand from afar and observe his actions.
Yoma6: 6
מֶה הָיָה עוֹשֶׂה? חוֹלֵק לָשׁוֹן שֶׁל זְהוֹרִית; חֶצְיוֹ קָשַׁר בַּסֶּלַע וְחֶצְיוֹ קָשַׁר בֵּין שְׁתֵּי קַרְנָיו, וּדְחָפוֹ לַאֲחוֹרָיו. וְהוּא מִתְגַּלְגֵּל וְיוֹרֵד, וְלֹא הָיָה מַגִּיעַ לַחֲצִי הָהָר, עַד שֶׁנַּעֲשָׂה אֵבָרִים אֵבָרִים. בָּא וְיָשַׁב לוֹ תַּחַת סֻכָּה אַחֲרוֹנָה עַד שֶׁתֶּחֱשַׁךְ.
וּמֵאֵימָתַי מְטַמֵּא בְגָדִים? מִשֶּׁיֵּצֵא חוּץ לְחוֹמַת יְרוּשָׁלַיִם. רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אוֹמֵר: מִשְּׁעַת דְּחִיָּתוֹ לַצּוּק.
What did he do? He parted the strip of red wool; half of it he tied to the rock and half he tied between its two horns, and pushed it backwards. It tumbled down, and before it reached halfway down the mountain, it was torn limb from limb. He would return and sit under the [shade of the] last booth until it became dark. And from when does he contaminate clothing? As soon as he gets outside the wall of Jerusalem. R' Shimon says: From the time he pushes him [down] to the precipice.
Yoma6: 7
בָּא לוֹ אֵצֶל פָּר וְשָׂעִיר הַנִּשְׂרָפִין. קְרָעָן וְהוֹצִיא אֶת אֵמוּרֵיהֶן. נְתָנָן בְּמָגִיס וְהִקְטִירָן עַל גַּבֵּי הַמִּזְבֵּחַ. קְלָעָן בְּמִקְלָעוֹת וְהוֹצִיאָן לְבֵית הַשְּׂרֵפָה.
וּמֵאֵימָתַי מְטַמְּאִין בְּגָדִים? מִשֶּׁיֵּצְאוּ חוּץ לְחוֹמַת הָעֲזָרָה. רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אוֹמֵר: מִשֶּׁיַּצִּית הָאוּר בְּרֻבָּן.
He came to the ox and he-goat which were to be burned. He tore them and removed their sacrificial parts. He put them in a plate and burned them upon the [Outer] Altar. He intertwined [the limbs of the ox and he-goat] into twists and removed them to the place of burning. And from when do these [people] contaminate clothing? From when they go outside the wall of the Courtyard. R' Shimon says: From when the fire catches onto the greater part of [the limbs].
Yoma6: 8
אָמְרוּ לוֹ לְכֹהֵן גָּדוֹל: ,,הִגִּיעַ שָׂעִיר לַמִּדְבָּר”. וּמִנַּיִן הָיוּ יוֹדְעִין שֶׁהִגִּיעַ שָׂעִיר לַמִּדְבָּר? דַּרְכִּיּוֹת הָיוּ עוֹשִׂין, וּמְנִיפִין בַּסּוּדָרִין, וְיוֹדְעִין שֶׁהִגִּיעַ שָׂעִיר לַמִּדְבָּר.
אָמַר רַבִּי יְהוּדָה: וַהֲלֹא סִימָן גָּדוֹל הָיָה לָהֶם: מִירוּשָׁלַיִם וְעַד בֵּית חִדּוּדוֹ שְׁלֹשָׁה מִילִין; הוֹלְכִין מִיל, וְחוֹזְרִין מִיל, וְשׁוֹהִין כְּדֵי מִיל. וְיוֹדְעִין שֶׁהִגִּיעַ שָׂעִיר לַמִּדְבָּר.
רַבִּי יִשְׁמָעֵאל אוֹמֵר: וַהֲלֹא סִמָּן אַחֵר הָיָה לָהֶם? לָשׁוֹן שֶׁל זְהוֹרִית הָיָה קָשׁוּר עַל פִּתְחוֹ שֶׁל הֵיכָל, וּכְשֶׁהִגִּיעַ שָׂעִיר לַמִּדְבָּר הָיָה הַלָּשׁוֹן מַלְבִּין, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: ,,אִם יִהְיוּ חֲטָאֵיכֶם כַּשָּׁנִים כַּשֶּׁלֶג יַלְבִּינוּ”.
They said to the Kohen Gadol, “The he-goat has reached the wilderness.” And how did they know that the he-goat had reached the wilderness? They set up watch-posts and waved cloths, and thus they knew that the he-goat had reached the wilderness. R' Yehudah said: But they had a dependable signal: From Jerusalem to the place of the he-goat's sharp peak was three mil; they walked a mil, returned a mil, and tarried for [the time needed to walk] a mil. Thus they knew that the he-goat had reached the wilderness. R' Yishmael says: But did they not have another sign? A strip of red wool was tied atop the Temple entrance, and when the he-goat reached the wilderness the strip of wool whitened, as it has been said: [Even] if your sins will be like crimson thread they will become white as snow.
Yoma7: 1
בָּא לוֹ כֹהֵן גָּדוֹל לִקְרוֹת. אִם רָצָה לִקְרוֹת בְּבִגְדֵי בוּץ, קוֹרֵא; וְאִם לֹא, קוֹרֵא בְאִצְטְלִית לָבָן מִשֶּׁלּוֹ.
חַזַּן הַכְּנֶסֶת נוֹטֵל סֵפֶר תּוֹרָה וְנוֹתְנוֹ לְרֹאשׁ הַכְּנֶסֶת; וְרֹאשׁ הַכְּנֶסֶת נוֹתְנוֹ לַסְּגָן; וְהַסְּגָן נוֹתְנוֹ לְכֹהֵן גָּדוֹל. וְכֹהֵן גָּדוֹל עוֹמֵד, וּמְקַבֵּל וְקוֹרֵא עוֹמֵד.
וְקוֹרֵא ,,אַחֲרֵי מוֹת” וְ,,אַךְ בֶּעָשׂוֹר”. וְגוֹלֵל סֵפֶר תּוֹרָה, וּמַנִּיחוֹ בְחֵיקוֹ, וְאוֹמֵר: ,,יוֹתֵר מִמַּה שֶּׁקָּרָאתִי לִפְנֵיכֶם כָּתוּב כָּאן”. וּ,,בֶעָשׂוֹר” שֶׁבְּחוֹמֶשׁ הַפְּקוּדִים קוֹרֵא עַל פֶּה. וּמְבָרֵךְ עָלֶיהָ שְׁמוֹנֶה בְרָכוֹת: עַל הַתּוֹרָה; וְעַל הָעֲבוֹדָה; וְעַל הַהוֹדָאָה; וְעַל מְחִילַת הֶעָוֹן; וְעַל הַמִּקְדָּשׁ בִּפְנֵי עַצְמוֹ; וְעַל יִשְׂרָאֵל בִּפְנֵי עַצְמָן; וְעַל יְרוּשָׁלַיִם בִּפְנֵי עַצְמָהּ; וְעַל הַכֹּהֲנִים בִּפְנֵי עַצְמָן; וְעַל שְׁאָר הַתְּפִלָּה.
The Kohen Gadol came to read. If he wished to read [wearing] his linen vestments, he may read; and if not, he would read while wearing his own white robe. The attendant of the synagogue takes a Torah Scroll and gives it to the head of the synagogue; the head of the synagogue gives it to the Deputy [Kohen Gadol]; and the Deputy gives it to the Kohen Gadol. The Kohen Gadol stands up, accepts [the scroll] and reads while standing. He reads [from] Acharei Mos and [the portion that begins] But on the tenth. Then he rolls up the Torah Scroll, puts it in his bosom, and says, “More than I have read to you is written here”; and he recites by heart from the Book of Numbers, beginning On the tenth. Then he recites over it eight benedictions: for the Torah; for the [sacrificial] service; for the thanksgiving; for the forgiving of sins; for the Temple separately; for Israel separately; for Jerusalem separately; for the Kohanim separately; and for the rest of the prayer.
Yoma7: 2
הָרוֹאֶה כֹהֵן גָּדוֹל כְּשֶׁהוּא קוֹרֵא אֵינוֹ רוֹאֶה פַר וְשָׂעִיר הַנִּשְׂרָפִים. וְהָרוֹאֶה פַר וְשָׂעִיר הַנִּשְׂרָפִים אֵינוֹ רוֹאֶה כֹהֵן גָּדוֹל כְּשֶׁהוּא קוֹרֵא; וְלֹא מִפְּנֵי שֶׁאֵינוֹ רַשַּׁאי, אֶלָּא שֶׁהָיְתָה דֶרֶךְ רְחוֹקָה, וּמְלֶאכֶת שְׁנֵיהֶן שָׁוָה כְאַחַת.
One who sees the Kohen Gadol when he reads cannot see the ox and the he-goat as they are burned. [And] one who sees the ox and the he-goat as they are burned cannot see the Kohen Gadol when he reads; not because he may not, but because the distance [between them] was great, and both services were performed at the same time.
Yoma7: 3
אִם בְּבִגְדֵי בוּץ קוֹרֵא, קִדֵּשׁ יָדָיו וְרַגְלָיו, פָּשַׁט, יָרַד וְטָבַל. עָלָה וְנִסְתַּפָּג. הֵבִיאוּ לוֹ בִגְדֵי זָהָב. וְלָבַשׁ וְקִדֵּשׁ יָדָיו וְרַגְלָיו. וְיָצָא וְעָשָׂה אֶת אֵילוֹ וְאֶת אֵיל הָעָם, וְאֶת שִׁבְעַת כְּבָשִׂים תְּמִימִים בְּנֵי שָׁנָה; דִּבְרֵי רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר.
רַבִּי עֲקִיבָא אוֹמֵר: עִם תָּמִיד שֶׁל שַׁחַר הָיוּ קְרֵבִין, וּפַר הָעוֹלָה. וְשָׂעִיר הַנַּעֲשֶׂה בַחוּץ הָיוּ קְרֵבִין עִם תָּמִיד שֶׁל בֵּין הָעַרְבַּיִם.
If he read [the Torah] in the linen vestments, he [then] washed his hands and feet, undressed, went down [into the mikveh] and immersed himself. He came up and dried himself. They brought him the golden vestments. He dressed and washed his hands and feet. Then he went out, and sacrificed his ram, and the ram of the people, and the seven unblemished male sheep in their first year; this is the opinion of R' Eliezer. R' Akiva says: They were brought with the daily morning offering, as well as the ox for a burnt offering. But the he-goat which is done outside were brought with the daily afternoon offering.
Yoma7: 4
קִדֵּשׁ יָדָיו וְרַגְלָיו, וּפָשַׁט, וְיָרַד וְטָבַל וְעָלָה וְנִסְתַּפָּג. הֵבִיאוּ לוֹ בִגְדֵי לָבָן; וְלָבַשׁ, וְקִדֵּשׁ יָדָיו וְרַגְלָיו.
נִכְנַס לְהוֹצִיא אֶת הַכַּף וְאֶת הַמַּחְתָּה.
קִדֵּשׁ יָדָיו וְרַגְלָיו, וּפָשַׁט, וְיָרַד וְטָבַל, עָלָה וְנִסְתַּפָּג.
הֵבִיאוּ לוֹ בִגְדֵי זָהָב; וְלָבַשׁ, וְקִדֵּשׁ יָדָיו וְרַגְלָיו, וְנִכְנַס לְהַקְטִיר קְטֹרֶת שֶׁל בֵּין הָעַרְבַּיִם וּלְהֵטִיב אֶת הַנֵּרוֹת. וְקִדֵּשׁ יָדָיו וְרַגְלָיו וּפָשַׁט. הֵבִיאוּ לוֹ בִגְדֵי עַצְמוֹ וְלָבַשׁ. וּמְלַוִּין אוֹתוֹ עַד בֵּיתוֹ, וְיוֹם טוֹב הָיָה עוֹשֶׂה לְאוֹהֲבָיו בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁיָּצָא בְשָׁלוֹם מִן הַקֹּדֶשׁ.
He washed his hands and feet, undressed, went down [into the mikveh] and immersed [himself], and came up and dried him-self. They brought him white [linen] vestments; he dressed, and washed his hands and feet. He entered [the Holy of Holies] to remove the ladle and the shovel. He washed his hands and feet, undressed, went down, immersed [himself], came up [from the mikveh], and dried himself. They brought him golden vestments; he dressed, washed his hands and feet, and entered [the Holy] to burn the afternoon incense and light the lamps. Then he washed his hands and feet and undressed. They brought him his personal clothing and he dressed. Then they accompanied him to his house, and he made a feast for his friends for having left the Temple safely.
Yoma7: 5
כֹּהֵן גָּדוֹל מְשַׁמֵּשׁ בִּשְׁמוֹנָה כֵלִים וְהַהֶדְיוֹט בְּאַרְבָּעָה: בְּכֻתֹּנֶת וּמִכְנָסַיִם וּמִצְנֶפֶת, וְאַבְנֵט. מוֹסִיף עָלָיו כֹּהֵן גָּדוֹל: חֹשֶׁן וְאֵפוֹד, וּמְעִיל, וָצִיץ.
בְּאֵלוּ נִשְׁאָלִין בְּאוּרִים וְתֻמִּים; וְאֵין נִשְׁאָלִין אֶלָּא לְמֶלֶךְ, וּלְבֵית דִּין, וּלְמִי שֶׁהַצִּבּוּר צָרִיךְ בּוֹ.
The Kohen Gadol serves in eight vestments and the common Kohen in four: in a tunic, pants, a hat, and a belt. In addition to these, the Kohen Gadol [wore] a breastplate, an ephod, a cloak, and a [golden] plate. [Wearing] these [eight vestments], they are consulted for [the decision of] the Urim V'Tumim. They are not consulted except for a king, the Court, or for someone whom the public needs.
Yoma8: 1
יוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים אָסוּר בַּאֲכִילָה וּבִשְׁתִיָּה וּבִרְחִיצָה וּבְסִיכָה וּבִנְעִילַת הַסַּנְדָּל וּבְתַשְׁמִישׁ הַמִּטָּה.
וְהַמֶּלֶךְ וְהַכַּלָּה יִרְחֲצוּ אֶת פְּנֵיהֶם. וְהַחַיָּה תִנְעֹל אֶת הַסַּנְדָּל; דִּבְרֵי רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר. וַחֲכָמִים אוֹסְרִין.
[On] Yom Kippur eating, drinking, washing [one's body], anointing [one's body with oil], wearing shoes, and cohabitation are prohibited. The king and the bride may wash their faces, and a new mother may put on shoes; these are the words of R' Eliezer. But the Sages prohibit [this].
