זֶה בָא בְחָבִיתוֹ שֶׁל יַיִן, וְזֶה בָא בְכַדּוֹ שֶׁל דְּבַשׁ, נִסְדְּקָה חָבִית שֶׁל דְּבַשׁ, וְשָׁפַךְ זֶה אֶת יֵינוֹ וְהִצִּיל אֶת הַדְּבַשׁ לְתוֹכוֹ, אֵין לוֹ אֶלָּא שְׂכָרוֹ. וְאִם אָמַר: ”אַצִּיל אֶת שֶׁלְּךָ, וְאַתָּה נוֹתֵן לִי דְמֵי שֶׁלִּי,” חַיָּב לִתֵּן לוֹ. שָׁטַף נָהָר חֲמוֹרוֹ וַחֲמוֹר חֲבֵרוֹ — שֶׁלּוֹ יָפֶה מָנֶה, וְשֶׁל חֲבֵרוֹ מָאתַיִם — הִנִּיחַ זֶה אֶת שֶׁלּוֹ וְהִצִּיל אֶת שֶׁל חֲבֵרוֹ, אֵין לוֹ אֶלָּא שְׂכָרוֹ. וְאִם אָמַר לוֹ: ”אֲנִי אַצִּיל אֶת שֶׁלְּךָ, וְאַתָּה נוֹתֵן לִי אֶת שֶׁלִּי,” חַיָּב לִתֵּן לוֹ.
[If] this one came with his barrel of wine, and this one came with his jug of honey, [and] the jug of honey cracked, and this one spilled out his wine and saved the honey in it, he is entitled only to his wage. But if he said: “I will save yours, and you pay me for mine,” he is obligated to pay him. [If] a river swept away his donkey and another's donkey —- his being worth a hun-dred [zuz], and the other's, two hundred —- [and] he left his and saved the other's, he is entitled only to his wage. But [if] he said to him: `I will save yours, and you pay me for mine,' he is obligated to pay him.
