A Jewish bondman is acquired with money or with a document, and acquires himself with years, or with Yovel, or with the deduction of money.  A Jewish bondwoman has the advantage over him that she acquires herself with signs.  One who[se ear] is bored is acquired by the act of boring, and acquires himself with Yovel or with the death of the master.

A Canaanite slave is acquired with money, with a document, or with an act of possession. He acquires himself with money —- through others, and with a document —- on his own; [these are] the words of R’ Meir.
