[If someone said to him,] “You stole my ox,” and he replied, “I did not steal [it],” [to which he said,] “I adjure you,” and he replied, “Amen!” —- he is liable. [But if he replied,] “I stole [it], but I did not slaughter [it] and I did not sell [it],” [to which he said,] “I adjure you,” and he replied, “Amen!” —- he is exempt.  [If he said to him,] “Your ox killed my ox,” and he replied, “It did not kill [it],” [to which he said,] “I adjure you,” and he replied, “Amen!” —- he is liable. [But if he claimed,] “Your ox killed my slave,” and he replied, “It did not kill [him]”; “I adjure you,” and he replied, “Amen!” —- he is exempt.  [If] someone said to him, “You injured and wounded me,” and he replied, “I did not injure [you] nor did I wound you,” [to which he said,] “I adjure you,” and he replied, “Amen!” —- he is liable. [But, if] his slave said to him, “You knocked out my tooth,” or “You blinded my eye,” [and he replied,] “I did not knock [it] out,” or “I did not blind [it]”,, [to which he said,] “I adjure you,” and he replied, “Amen!” —- he is exempt. This is the rule: Whoever pays by his own admission —- is liable, but whoever does not pay by his own admission —- is exempt.
