A man betroths [a woman] by himself or through his agent. A woman is betrothed by herself or through her agent. A man gives his daughter in kiddushin when she is a naarah, by himself or through his agent. [If] one says to a woman: “Be betrothed to me with this date; be betrothed to me with this one” —-if one of them has the value of a perutah, she is betrothed; if not, she is not betrothed. [If he says:] “With this, and with this, and with this” —- if there is the value of a perutah in all of them —- she is betrothed; if not, she is not betrothed. [If] she was eating [them] one by one, she is not betrothed, unless one of them has the value of a perutah.
