A man may not plant a tree near the field of another unless he distances [the tree] four cubits from it, whether vines or any other tree. [If] there was a fence in between, this one may approach the fence on this side and that one may approach the fence on that side.  [If] the roots extended into his neighbor's [property], he may [cut them off] to a depth of three handbreadths, so that they should not impede the plow. [If] he was digging a pit, a ditch, or a vault, he may cut downward, and the wood belongs to him.
