They may surround [the camp] with three ropes, one above the other, provided that there not be three fists between one rope and the other. The thickness of the ropes is more than a fist, in order that the total should be ten fists.

They may surround [the camp] with pickets, provided that [the space] between one picket and the other is not three fists. They spoke of a caravan — [these are] the words of R’ Yehudah. But the Sages say: They spoke of a caravan only because it is common. Any partition not consisting of a warp and a weft is not [considered] a partition — [these are] the words of R’ Yose ben R’ Yehudah. But the Sages say: Either of the two. Four obligations were waived in a camp: They may bring wood from any-where; they are exempt from washing hands; from demai; and from making an eruv.
