שמשון הלך אחר עיניו לפיכך נקרו פלשתים את עיניו שנאמר ויאחזוהו פלשתים וינקרו את עיניו אבשלום נתגאה בשערו לפיכך נתלה בשערו ולפי שבא על עשר פילגשי אביו לפיכך נתנו בו עשר לונביות שנאמר ויסבו עשרה אנשים נושאי כלי יואב ולפי שגנב שלשה לבבות לב אביו ולב בית דין ולב ישראל שנאמר ויגנוב אבשלום את לב אנשי ישראל לפיכך נתקעו בו שלשה שבטים שנאמר ויקח שלשה שבטים בכפו ויתקעם בלב אבשלום

לב אביו אמר לו אבשלום לאביו, כתוב לי שילכו עמי שנים איש שאבחר מכל ישראל, כתב לו. והיה מראה חותמו של אביו לשנים, והולכים אחריו, לשנים אחרים והולכים אחריו, עד שכינס מאתים איש, כולן ראשי סנהדראות. הרי שגנב לב אביו ולב ב"ד. ולב כל ישראל, דכתיב ויגנוב אבשלום את לב אנשי ישראל

וכן לענין הטובה מרים המתינה למשה שעה אחת שנאמר ותתצב אחותו מרחוק לפיכך נתעכבו לה ישראל שבעה ימים במדבר שנאמר והעם לא נסע עד האסף מרים יוסף זכה לקבור את אביו ואין באחיו גדול ממנו שנאמר ויעל יוסף לקבור את אביו ויעל עמו גם רכב גם פרשים מי לנו גדול מיוסף שלא נתעסק בו אלא משה משה זכה בעצמות יוסף ואין בישראל גדול ממנו שנאמר ויקח משה את עצמות יוסף עמו מי גדול ממשה שלא נתעסק בו אלא המקום שנאמר ויקבור אותו בגיא לא על משה בלבד אמרו אלא על כל הצדיקים שנאמר והלך לפניך צדקך כבוד ה' יאספך

וכן לענין הטובה נותנים לו לאדם שכר מעין הטובה שעשה. ומיהו יותר ממה שעשה משתלם דמדה טובה מרובה בתשלומין ממדת פורענות
Samson followed his eyes, therefore the Philistines pierced his eyes, as it is stated (Judges 16:21): And the Philistines took hold of him and pierced his eyes. Absalom glorified in his hair, therefore he was hung by his hair. And inasmuch as he cohabited with the ten concubines of his father, ten lances were thrust into him, as it is stated (II Samuel 18:15): And ten men, bearers of Joab’s armor, circled [him] ... And inasmuch as he stole three hearts —- the heart of his father, the heart of the court, and the heart of Israel —- as it is stated (II Samuel 15:6): So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel, therefore, three darts were thrust into him —- as it is stated (II Samuel 18:14): And Joab took three darts in his hand and thrust them into Absalom’s heart.
And so too for good: Miriam waited for Moses one hour, as it is stated (Exodus 2:4): And his sister stationed herself from afar ...; therefore Israel delayed for her seven days in the desert, as it is stated: and the people did not travel on until Miriam was brought in. Joseph was privileged to bury his father and none of his brothers was greater than he, as it is stated (Gen. 50:7,9): so Joseph went up to bury his father . . . and he brought up with him both chariots and horsemen . . . Who was [treated with] as much [honor] as Joseph that none other than Moses attended to him. Moses was privileged to [attend to] the bones of Joseph, and there was none in Israel greater than him, as it is stated: And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him. Who was [treated with] greater [honor] than Moses, that none but the Almighty attended to him, as it is stated (Deuteronomy 34:6): And He bur-ied him in the valley. And not of Moses alone did they say so, but of all the righteous, as it is stated (Isaiah 58:8): And your righteousness shall go before you, and the glory of HASHEM shall gather you in.
