One must distance a tree twenty-five cubits from a town; and in [the case of] carob or sycamore trees, fifty cubits. Abba Shaul says: Any nonfruit-bearing tree [requires] fifty cubits. If the town was there first, he cuts down [the tree] and does not pay compensation; but if the tree was there first, he cuts [it] down and pays compensation. [If there is] doubt [whether] this one was first or that one, he cuts [it] down and does not pay compensation.

One must distance a fixed threshing floor fifty cubits from a town. One may not establish a fixed threshing floor within his own property unless he owns fifty cubits [of land] in every direction, and he must distance [it] from the plantings of his neighbor and from his plowed-over areas so that it should not damage [them].

One must distance carcasses, graves, and a tannery fifty cubits from a town. One may establish a tannery only to the east of a town. R' Akiva says: He may establish it in any direction except to the west, and he must distance [it] fifty cubits.

One must distance a flax pool from vegetables, and leeks from onions, and mustard plants from bees. R' Yose permits [it in the case of] the mustard plants.
