One who finds tefillin should bring them in pair [by] pair. Rabban Gamliel says: Two [by] two. To what do these words apply? To old ones, but for new ones he is exempt. If he found them tied in pairs or bundles, he must wait near them until dark, then bring them in. But in a time of danger, he may cover them and leave.

R’ Shimon says: He hands them to his friend, and his friend to his friend, until he reaches the outermost courtyard. So, too, his child; he hands him to his friend, and his friend to his friend, even if they are a hundred. R’ Yehudah says: A person may hand a barrel to his friend, and his friend to his friend, even beyond the techum. They said to him: This should not go further than the feet of its owners.

If one was reading a book [of Scripture] on the threshold [and] the book rolled from his hand, he may roll it to himself. If he was reading on top of the roof and the book rolled from his hand, as long as it has not yet reached within ten fists [of the ground], he may roll it to himself; once it has reached ten fists, he should turn it over on its writing. R’ Yehudah says: Even if it is only removed from the ground by the width of a needle, he may roll it to himself. R’ Shimon says: Even on the very ground, he may roll it to himself; for no Rabbinically prohibited matter may stand in the way of the Holy Scripture.

A ledge which is in front of a window, one may put onto it and take from it on the Sabbath. A person may stand in a private domain and move objects in a public domain, [or] in a public domain and move objects in a private domain; provided he does not take [them] beyond four cubits.
