We may pour water over wine-dregs so that they become clear; and we may filter wine through cloths or through a basket made of palm twigs; and we may put an egg into a mustard strainer. We may make a honeyed wine on the Sabbath. R’ Yehudah says: On the Sabbath [it may be made] in a cup; on Yom Tov [it may be made] in a bottle; and on [Chol] HaMoed, in a cask. [But] R’ Tzaddok says: Everything depends on [the number of] the guests.

We may not soak asafetida in warm water, but one may put [it] into vinegar. We may not soak vetches nor rub them, but one may put [them] into a sieve or into a basket. We may not sift straw with a sieve, nor put it on a high place so that the chaff will drop; but one may take it up in a sieve and pour [it] into the feeding-trough.

We may sweep out [the feeding-trough] from before a stall ox, and we may move it to the sides because of the excretum — [these are] the words of R’ Dosa. But the Sages prohibit [it]. We may take [feed] from before one animal and place it before another animal on the Sabbath.

Straw that is on the bed, one may not move it with his hand, but he may move it with his body; and if it was fodder for animals, or if a pillow or a sheet was over it, he may move it with his hand. A householder’s clothes-press we may undo, but we may not press down. A launderer’s [press, however], one may not touch. R’ Yehudah says: If it was undone from before the Sabbath, one may undo it completely and remove it.
