[If] his field was planted with onions, and he desired to plant inside it rows of gourds — Rabbi Yishmael says: He uproots two rows and plants one row and leaves standing onions in place of two rows and uproots two rows and plants one row. Rabbi Akiva says: He uproots two rows and plants two rows and leaves standing onions in place of two rows and uproots two rows and plants two rows. But the Sages say: If there are not twelve cubits between one row [of gourds] and the next, he may not retain the plants in the middle.

Gourd in greens is like greens. But in grain, we give it a beis rova. [If] his field was planted with grain, and he wished to plant inside it a row of gourds, we give it for its work six handbreadths. If it grew large, he must uproot in front of it. R’ Yose says: We give it for its work four cubits. They said to him: Do you treat this more stringently than the grapevine? He said to them: We find that this is stricter than the grapevine, because for a single grapevine we give for its work six handbreadths, while for a single gourd [plant] we give a beis rova. R’ Meir says in the name of R’ Yishmael: If there are three gourd plants per beis se’ah, he may not bring [other] seed into the beis se’ah. R’ Yose ben HaChotef Efrosi said in the name of R’ Yishmael: [If] there are three gourd plants per beis kor, he may not bring [other] seed into the beis kor.

The clearing of a vineyard — Beis Shammai say: twenty-four cubits. But Beis Hillel say: sixteen cubits. The perimeter of a vineyard — Beis Shammai say: sixteen cubits. But Beis Hillel say: twelve cubits. And what is the clearing of a vineyard? A vineyard which has been destroyed in its middle. If there are not sixteen cubits there, he may not bring [other] seed there. [If] there were sixteen cubits there, we give it its work area, and he may plant the rest.

What is the perimeter of the vineyard? [The area] between the vineyard and the wall. If there are not twelve cubits there, he may not bring seed there. [If] there were twelve cubits there, we give it its work area, and he may plant the remainder.
