No types of zeraim may be planted in a patch, but all types of greens may be planted in a patch. Mustard and smooth beans are types of zeraim. Large beans are types of greens. A border which was a handbreadth high and was reduced is acceptable, since it was acceptable at the start. If a furrow or water channel is one handbreadth deep, one may plant inside it three species, one over here and one over here and one in the middle.

[If] a rosh tor of greens entered into a field of a different [type of] greens, this is permitted since it appears like the end of his field. If his field was planted with greens, and he wants to plant inside it a row of a different [type of] greens — R’ Yishmael says: [Not] until the furrow reaches from one end of the field to the other. R’ Akiva says: A length of six handbreadths and a width equal to its fullness. R’ Yehudah says: A width the full width of a foot.

[If] someone plants two rows of melons, two rows of gourds, [and] two rows of Egyptian bean — [this is] permitted. A row of melons, a row of gourds, [and] a row of Egyptian bean — [this is] forbidden. A row of melons, a row of gourds, a row of Egyptian bean, and a row of melons — R’ Eliezer permits, but the Sages forbid.

A person may plant a melon and a gourd in the same hole, provided that this one leans to this side and this one leans to this side [and the hair of this leans to here and the hair of this leans to here, for all that the Rabbis prohibited was decreed only because of suspicious appearance].
