[If] someone wants to make his field into squares of every species, he can make twenty-four squares in a beis se’ah — each square is a beis rova — and he can plant inside it any species he wants. [If] there were one or two squares, he can plant them with mustard. [If there were] three, he cannot plant [them] with mustard, because it looks like a field of mustard. This is the opinion of R’ Meir. But the Sages say: Nine squares are permitted, ten are forbidden. R’ Eliezer ben Yaakov says: Even if his entire field is a beis kor, he cannot make in it more than one square.

All that is within a beis rova is counted in the measure of a beis rova. The work area of a grapevine, a grave, or a rock are counted in the measure of a beis rova. Grain with grain — a beis rova; greens with greens — six handbreadths. Grain with greens, greens with grain — a beis rova. R’ Eliezer says: Greens with grain — six handbreadths.

Grain leaning over grain, greens [leaning] over greens, grain [leaning] over greens, [and] greens [leaning] over grain — all is permitted except for Greek gourd. R’ Meir says: Also chatemelon and Egyptian bean. But I see their opinion better than mine.

If a patch is six handbreadths by six handbreadths, one may plant within it five varieties, four on the four sides of the patch and one in the middle. [If] it has a border a handbreadth high, one may plant in it thirteen [varieties], three on each border and one in the middle. It is not permitted to plant a head of turnip inside the border, since it fills it up. R’ Yehudah says: Six in the middle.
